Vintage Cognac

Issued from a single year, the Cognacs Millésimés represent a tiny part of the total production of Cognac. The ageing of these spirits - not blended - is strictly controlled by the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac. When bottling takes place, the quantities are generally very limited.

What is a Cognac Millésimé?

A Cognac Millésimé is an eau-de-vie from a single harvest year. Unlike traditional Cognacs, which are the result of blends of different years, the vintage highlights the purity of a single vintage, like a frozen moment in the vineyard.

This type of Cognac is extremely Rare. Regulations require that each barrel be sealed by a customs officer as soon as aging begins. The slightest addition, removal or blending is forbidden, guaranteeing total traceability. This rigor makes it an exceptional product, sought after for its transparency, complexity and uniqueness.

On the nose and palate, Cognacs Millésimés offer profiles strongly marked by the climatic year, the producing house and the terroir of origin. It's not Rare to find notes that are more Brutes, expressive, less smoothed out than in a XO or a VSOP.

How many years does it take to obtain a Cognac Millésimé?

The Cognac Millésimé has no minimumlegal age like a VS (2 years) or a XO (10 years), but in practice, it is very Rare often marketed before 15 or 20 years of ageing. Some can wait much longer: 30, 40, even 50 years. At this level of maturity, it joins the world of Cognacs Hors d'Âge, those Rares treasures of extraordinary complexity.

Why the delay? Because a Cognac from a single harvest takes time to achieve the balance and richness of a great blend. It's a demonstration of patience, know-how and mastery of ageing.

A Cognac Millésimé is not systematically better, but it is more singular. It tells the story of a particular year, a particular weather, a particular choice of barrel, a particular philosophy. We choose it for its typicality, its speciality.

Cognac Millésimé: what to look for?

Choosing a Cognac Millésimé is like choosing a fine wine: every detail counts. It all depends on what you're looking for: the emotion of an anniversary vintage, the finesse of a Grand Cru, or the signature of a prestigious house.

Here are the main criteria to consider:

  • The year: some years are sunnier, others more acidic. Find out about the climate of the year in question. For example, a 1975 will be very different from a 1990.
  • The house: Grosperrin, Vallein Tercinier, Prunier or Delamain... each producer has its own style. Some houses are renowned for their old casks, others for the purity of their distillates.
  • The cru: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies... Terroir influences power, freshness and aromatic complexity.
  • The price: a Cognac Millésimé is often more expensive, but it's not just a matter of age. Rareity, year and reputation also play a part.
  • New or old? Older wines are often deeper, but sometimes less fruity. Younger wines are more vibrant, fresher.

A good choice is based on emotion, curiosity and confidence in the house.

Cognac Millésimé: what to do to avoid altering anything?

A Cognac Millésimé is an archive of time. It therefore deserves special attention.

Store it upright, away from light, in a cool place Sec between 15 and 20°C. Avoid temperature variations.

Make sure the bottle is tightly closed: oxygen is the enemy of Cognac. Once opened, it should ideally be consumed within the year to pRéserver enjoy its full aromatic richness.

Unlike wine, Cognac does not age in the bottle. It doesn't gain in quality over time, but can lose its superbness if poorly stored.

Properly stored, a Cognac Millésimé retains all its intensity and delivers, even years later, the faithful taste of an exceptional year.

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
