Château La Croix du Casse

Mentioned on 18th-century maps by Pierre de Belleyme, engineer and geographer to King Louis XV, this Domaine saw its first vines planted in 1775. In 1956, Georges Audy, a well-known wine merchant and winemaker from Pomerol, who also owned Château Clinet, acquired the property. He replanted a large part of the vineyard, which had been severely damaged by the previous winter's frost.

A few years later, Jean-Michel Arcaute, his son-in-law and talented winemaker, took over management of the estate. Thanks to the expertise of renowned oenologist Michel Rolland, he considerably improved the quality of the wine, giving Château La Croix du Casse an excellent reputation among enlightened wine lovers. Wines from this Château are renowned for their finesse, complexity and ageing potential, characteristics prized by connoisseurs.

In 2001, Jean-Michel Arcaute died tragically in a boating accident in Arcachon, leaving his vineyards behind. Groupe des Assurances Nationales, temporary owner of Château La Croix du Casse, sold the property to Philippe Castéja and his sister, Chantal Preben Hansen, in 2005. Already owners of eight other Châteaux, they undertook extensive renovation work, including roofing, trellising and the vat room.

The discovery of a layer of clay in the subsoil enabled the soil to be reworked, promoting deep rooting of the vines and enriching the quality of the grapes. This intervention has a significant impact on the wines, giving them extra depth and aromatic richness.

Today, the wines of Château La Croix du Casse are prized for their elegance and structure, combining red and black fruit aromas, spicy notes and a touch of minerality. Discerning connoisseurs particularly appreciate their ability to evolve favorably over time, revealing a complexity and depth that testify to the expertise and winemaking heritage of this historic Domaine.
