Nestled in the heart of the legendary Speyside region, Tamdhu is a distillery where history, craftsmanship, and innovation come together to create exceptional single malts. Founded in 1897, Tamdhu has forged a unique reputation by focusing exclusively on maturation in sherry casks, a pioneering method that gives its whiskies an incomparable aromatic richness and golden color. Today, Tamdhu embodies the perfect alliance between tradition and modernity, and stands out as one of the few distilleries to master the art of 100% sherry cask aging, from start to finish. Read more
Tamdhu's adventure began in 1897, at the height of the golden age of Scotch whisky. Designed by architect Charles Doig, the distillery stood out from the outset for its modern design and efficiency, quickly becoming a key player in the production of blended whiskies such as The Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark. Tamdhu was also one of the last distilleries to malt its own barley, even supplying other sites such as Glenrothes and Highland Park.
However, its history is also one of remarkable resilience. In 2010, after more than a century of activity, Tamdhu closed its doors under the Edrington Group. But in 2011, the distillery was bought by Ian Macleod Distillers, who relaunched production in May 2013 with a clear vision: to make Tamdhu a benchmark for single malts aged in sherry casks. Since then, Tamdhu has successfully reinvented itself, focusing on quality, authenticity, and a strong identity, while preserving its artisanal heritage.
Unique expertise: the art of sherry cask
Tamdhu stands out for its production philosophy centered on exclusive maturation in sherry casks, a tradition that began when the distillery was first established. This approach, rare in the industry, gives its whiskies a rich aromatic palette, marked by notes of dried fruit, sweet spices, honey, and nuts, all enveloped in a smooth texture and deep amber color.
100% maturation in sherry casks
From its inception, Tamdhu was one of the first Scottish distilleries to import sherry casks directly from Spain, a practice that still defines its identity today. Unlike most distilleries, which use a mixture of bourbon and sherry casks, Tamdhu relies exclusively on the latter, ensuring unique intensity and aromatic complexity.
Distillation stills with a distinctive design
Tamdhu's six stills, three for distilling the wash and three for the spirit, are designed to promote optimal contact with copper, resulting in a pure and fruity distillate. Their wide shape and ascending neck contribute to the smoothness and roundness of the whiskies, while capturing the fruity esters that are the distillery's signature.
Pure local spring water
The water used in Tamdhu's production comes from a natural spring located near the distillery. Its purity and minerality play a key role in the finesse and balance of the spirits, reinforcing their distinctive character.
A masterful distillation process
Distillation at Tamdhu is carried out with artisanal precision, allowing only the "heart" of the distillate to be selected, a guarantee of quality and elegance. This rigor, combined with long and controlled fermentation, ensures whiskies of great complexity and lingering smoothness.
Since its rebirth, Tamdhu has quickly regained its place among the most respected distilleries in Speyside. Its whiskies, such as Tamdhu 10 Year Old and Batch Strength, have been critically acclaimed and awarded prizes at international competitions, including the Spirits Business Distillery Masters and the International Wine & Spirit Competition. The distillery is also recognized for its commitment to innovation and quality, as well as its unique approach to sherry cask aging, which makes it a benchmark for lovers of rich and aromatic whiskies.
Although Tamdhu only opens its doors on special occasions, such as the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, each visit is an immersion into a world where tradition and passion combine to create exceptional whiskies.
Tamdhu embodies the very essence of Speyside single malt: a perfect balance of smoothness, complexity, and aromatic intensity. Its commitment to exclusive sherry cask maturation, its artisanal expertise, and its rich history make it a distillery apart, where every drop of whisky tells a story of passion, resilience, and excellence.
