Worthy Park

Worthy Park

Nestled in the lush Lluidas Vale valley at an altitude of 1,200 feet, Worthy Park is much more than a distillery: it is a living monument to the history of Jamaican rum. Founded in 1670 and producing rum since 1741, Worthy Park is the oldest distillery still in operation in Jamaica, and one of the last to be 100% Jamaican and family-owned. After a 40-year hiatus, the distillery was relaunched in 2005 with state-of-the-art facilities, while preserving traditional pot still distillation methods. Today, Worthy Park is recognized as the Rum Producer of the Year 2023 and a global benchmark for its powerful, fruity, ester-rich rums that captivate enthusiasts and experts alike. Read more

Worthy Park

Three hundred years of history and a modern renaissance

The history of Worthy Park dates back to 1670, when the estate was licensed for sugar cane cultivation. The first record of rum production dates back to 1741, making Worthy Park the oldest rum distillery still in operation in Jamaica. For more than two centuries, the distillery prospered, until overproduction in the 1960s forced Worthy Park to cease production in 1962.

In 2005, the Clarke family, owners of the estate since 1918, decided to relaunch the distillery with an ultra-modern and efficient facility, while preserving traditional methods. Today, Worthy Park is one of the few distilleries to produce rum from cane to glass on a single site, with its own sugar cane fields, sugar factory, and distillery. This integrated model guarantees exceptional quality and traceability, praised by connoisseurs around the world.

Craftsmanship and unique production methods

Worthy Park stands out for its traditional yet innovative approach, where every stage of production is carefully controlled to offer rums of rare complexity and intensity.

From cane to glass: integrated production

Worthy Park grows its own sugar cane in the Lluidas Vale valley, renowned for its volcanic soil and ideal tropical climate. The cane is harvested by hand, pressed on site to extract the molasses, then distilled in copper pot stills using methods that have been passed down since the 18th century. This approach produces rums rich in esters and congeners, with fruity, spicy, and powerful profiles typical of the Jamaican style.

Pot still distillation for exceptional rums

Unlike many modern distilleries, Worthy Park uses only pot stills, which capture the full complexity of the natural aromas. The rums are distilled in two main styles:

  • WPL (Worthy Park Light): A light and fruity rum with notes of banana, pear, and vanilla.
  • WPM (Worthy Park Medium): A more full-bodied and spicy rum, with aromas of tropical fruits, caramel, and pepper.

These unique profiles are the result of long fermentation and careful distillation, which preserve the natural esters and offer an intense and memorable taste experience.

Aged in American oak barrels

Worthy Park rums are aged in American oak barrels that previously held bourbon, giving them notes of vanilla, coconut, caramel, and sweet spices. Jamaica's tropical climate accelerates the aging process, allowing the rums to develop rare complexity and depth in record time. Among the flagship expressions are:

  • Worthy Park Single Estate Reserve: A rum aged for 6 to 10 years, offering aromas of ripe fruit, honey, and fine wood. This rum has been praised for its balance and power.
  • Worthy Park 109: A full-bodied and intense edition, aged in bourbon barrels, with notes of flambéed banana, caramel, and pepper. This rum won the title of Rum of the Year 2023 at the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
  • Worthy Park Rum-Bar: An overproof rum (57% ABV), appreciated for its power and fruity character, ideal for tiki cocktails and bold mixes.

A commitment to quality and innovation

Worthy Park is one of the few distilleries to have its own sugar mill, allowing it to control every stage of production, from growing the cane to bottling. The distillery also uses native yeasts cultivated from its own sugar cane, reinforcing the unique and authentic character of its rums. In 2023, Worthy Park was named Rum Producer of the Year at the International Wine & Spirit Competition, a first for a Jamaican distillery.

Worthy Park is regularly praised by critics and international competitions. Among its most prestigious awards are:

  • Rum Producer of the Year 2023 at the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
  • Gold Medal for Worthy Park 109 and Single Estate Reserve at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
  • Unanimous recognition for its powerful, fruity, ester-rich rums, which embody the soul of traditional Jamaican rum

Worthy Park opens its doors to visitors for guided tours of the distillery, sugar cane fields, and aging cellars. Enthusiasts can go behind the scenes of production, taste rare rums, and learn more about the history of Jamaica and its legendary spirits. The distillery also offers mixology workshops and special events, where participants can explore the subtleties of Jamaican rums and their use in cocktails.
