Château d'Issan

Château d'Issan

The Château d'Issan is a magnificent moated estate nestled in the heart of the Margaux vineyard in the Médoc. This wine was notably served in 1152 at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry Plantagenet of England, and was much appreciated several centuries later by the Prince of Wales in the 1720s, as well as by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria.

This reputation earned it the following motto on its label: Regum Mensis Aris que Deorum, "For the table of kings and the altar of the gods".

The Château d'Issan was named Third Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification for Médoc wines.

Today equally owned by the Cruse and Lorenzetti families, the vineyard is planted on a sumptuous deep gravel terroir, with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. The wines are aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new.

One Second wine, Blason d'Issan, and a third wine, Haut-Médoc d'Issan en appellation Haut-Médoc, are produced by the estate.

The Château d'Issan is renowned for its flamboyant, aristocratic style, where the wines are complex and exquisite.

Description Château d'Issan 2024.

Weather that sets the pace
The cold gradually set in from the beginning of January, with temperatures dropping to -4°C on some mornings. However, this winter period remains relatively mild compared to seasonal norms. In February and March, there was heavy rainfall, but no negative temperatures were recorded. Sunny days make for a particularly pleasant transition to spring.

In harmony with nature
Prophylactic work has been meticulously carried out with the aim of maintaining optimal vineyard health. These steps include de-budding, pruning and lifting, all of which contribute to maintaining the balance necessary for the vine's healthy development. Budburst began on March 27, a sign of an early vintage. Thanks to sunshine and ideal temperatures for the season, flowering began on May 29. Mid-veraison occurred on August 12, marking a decisive turning point in the ripening of the bunches.

Grand Classique
Harvesting took place from September 26 to October 8, 2024. A rigorous sorting process was carried out, combining the precision of manual selection and optical sorting. Vinification then took place in a serene, controlled atmosphere, offering ideal conditions for revealing the terroir's potential. The Extractions, carried out with great gentleness, brought out all the finesse of the grapes, with delicate, elegant tannins, promising a vintage of great balance.

The art of blending
The blending took place on January 10, in the presence of our oenologist Éric Boissenot. The 2024 vintage stands out for its finesse and elegance. It combines suppleness and balance, offering a refined, silky wine, ready to be enjoyed in its youth, with a promising future. A vintage that seduces with its freshness and purity, while remaining faithful to the expression of its terroir.

ROSES2025

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.

To earn this coveted “label,” each bottle must pass through rigorous stages:

  • Ultra-strict specifications demanding authenticity and perfection.
  • Two successive blind tastings, conducted by a jury of five independent oenologists.
  • A unanimous verdict: The quality of the cuvée must receive the absolute unanimous approval of the jury to be entitled to bear the name “Spécial Club.”
