In the 12th century, traces of this Château can already be found in the Archives of the Arsac seigneury, owned by the de Montaigne family, the famous French writer and Mayor of Bordeaux in the 16th century.
It borders Châteaux Cantenac-Brown and Brane-Cantenac to the north and Château Giscours to the east. It is situated on one of the Médoc's highest gravelly hilltops, from which it takes its name. Its vineyard is remarkable for two reasons: it's in one piece and it faces due south.
It's a fifth Grand Cru Classé following the prestigious 1855 list.
Varietal composition: Cabernet Sauvignon: 45, Merlot 30%, Cabernet Franc 20% and 5% Petit Verdot.
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, and annual production is in the order of 255 barrels, or around 300,000 bottles.
50% of the wine is aged in new barrels for an average of 18 months, depending on the typicity of the harvest.
Château Du Tertre 2024 embodies the elegance and precision of a great Margaux. The result of a rigorous plot selection on the Garonne gravel and glacial sands of Domaine (52 ha), this vintage features a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), complemented by Merlot (13%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (2%).
The 16-year-old vines are harvested by hand between September 24 and October 8.
Vinification takes place in wood, concrete and stainless steel vats, with gentle Extraction, followed by maceration for around twenty days. Aging for 16 months in Bordeaux barrels (60% new) refines a wine with a noble structure.
On the nose, notes of ripe black fruit, cocoa and smoke precede a full, taut palate carried by the freshness of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The overall impression is one of density, aromatic purity and a long finish, heralding good ageing potential.
Harvest date: September 24 to October 8, 2024.
