In the 12th century, traces of this Château can already be found in the Archives of the Arsac seigneury, owned by the de Montaigne family, the famous French writer and Mayor of Bordeaux in the 16th century.
It borders Châteaux Cantenac-Brown and Brane-Cantenac to the north and Château Giscours to the east. It is situated on one of the Médoc's highest gravelly hilltops, from which it takes its name. Its vineyard is remarkable for two reasons: it's in one piece and it faces due south.
It's a fifth Grand Cru Classé following the prestigious 1855 list.
Varietal composition: Cabernet Sauvignon: 45, Merlot 30%, Cabernet Franc 20% and 5% Petit Verdot.
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, and annual production is in the order of 255 barrels, or around 300,000 bottles.
50% of the wine is aged in new barrels for an average of 18 months, depending on the typicity of the harvest.
Les Hauts Du Tertre 2024 illustrates the qualitative rise of Domaine, led by Cynthia Capelaere and Romain Beurienne, with guidance from Éric Boissenot and Édouard Lambert.
Produced from 52 hectares of Garonne gravel and glacial sands, this vintage is based on a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vines, averaging 16 years of age, benefit from an ambitious restructuring plan with a 2035 horizon.
Hand-harvested between September 24 and October 8, the wine is gently vinified (wood, concrete and stainless steel vats), then aged for 12 months in barrels (40% new).
On tasting, the wine seduces with its aromatic freshness, clean red fruit notes and juicy, gourmet structure.
The density of the Cabernet Sauvignon structures the whole, balanced by the roundness of the Merlot, the uprightness of the Cabernet Franc and the tension of the Petit Verdot. The long, dynamic finish makes Second an elegant wine with promising ageing potential.
Harvest date: September 24 to October 8, 2024.
