It's hard to resist the charm of Château Lascombes, nestled in the heart of the Margaux appellation. It was named by its owner, Chevalier Antoine de Lascombes, in 1625.
Since then, several generations of Lascombes have succeeded one another, each contributing to the property's reputation.
The Château Lascombes was thus crowned Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, during the famous official classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition. Having belonged to a French mutual insurance company since 2011, Château passed into the hands of the American Lawrence family in November 2022. Owners of a Domaine in Napa Valley, their aim is to continue the quest for perfection for this iconic Médoc cru.
The vineyard is located on clay gravel and clay-limestone soils, and reaches a size of 130 hectares of vines including 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 months for the grand vin and 16 months for the Second vin, Chevalier de Lascombes, in oak barrels, of which 70-80% is new wood for the grand vin.
The Château Lascombes produces concentrated wines imbued with elegance, balance and undeniable pleasure.
After several sunny vintages, 2024 marked a return to "old-fashioned" vintages: rainy, cool and slow ripening, requiring constant precision and responsiveness from the winemakers. The dull spring brought with it exceptional pressure from mildew, while at the same time slowing down the development of the vines, which were waterlogged. All our forces had to be fully mobilized to protect the vines, taking advantage of the few windows of opportunity that Mother Nature was kind enough to grant us. Such conditions almost made us forget the small miracle of summer. From mid-June onwards, the weather cleared up, drying out the soil and allowing the vines to continue their cycle. July and August, warm and sunny, favored ripening and ensured solid quality potential. Although pre-harvest rain tempered our enthusiasm, a harvest carried out with responsiveness and precision - between strategic choices of harvest dates by plot and meticulous sorting - enabled us to express the best of the vintage. In October, cool temperatures curbed botrytis, guaranteeing a serene end to the harvest.
Precision is the key word to describe these wines. 2024 gives birth to slender wines with an accomplished balance between moderate alcohol, refreshing acidity and slender, silky tannins, sublimated by pure fruit Rare. The great Cabernet Sauvignons from the estate's historic terroir shine with their balance between power and delicacy, once again proving their excellence in all conditions. Tender, crisply fruited Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot enrich the blend.
The result of this quest for precision is a harmonious, chiselled wine of purity and elegance, reviving the timeless classicism of the great wines of Bordeaux. A vintage of charm and pleasure, which will seduce wine-lovers throughout its evolution.
