It's impossible to talk about the great wines of the Médoc without mentioning Château Lafite-Rothschild. A Domaine steeped in history, whose reputation and prestige are matched only by the legendary wines born there.
Ancient medieval seigneury, it was under Jacques de Ségur, from a family of Bordeaux parliamentarians, that the first vines were planted in the 1670's. The wine gradually acquired an excellent reputation thanks to technical progress, at the royal court of Versailles but also across the Channel with the expansion of trade with England. Then in 1787, Thomas Jefferson, US ambassador to France at the time, praised it in his travel notes.
The Château Lafite was promoted to the rank of Ier Grand Cru Classé in 1855 on the occasion of the Paris Universal Exhibition, a distinction it shares with the Château Latour, Château Haut-Brion and Château Margaux, as well as the Château Mouton Rothschild since 1973.
The subsequent rise of Château Lafite owes much to the Rothschild family, with Baron James de Rothschild acquiring the estate in 1868 and attaching his name to it from that date. "A magnificent deep garnet-red color, the nose of this wine opens with a complex bouquet of ripe red fruit, spices and fine oak. The palate is beautifully concentrated, with a full, greedy attack. This is followed by a mid-palate of marked tannins that begin to integrate gently. Raspberry and cherry aromas express themselves with intensity, underlined by delicious notes of mocha. The finish, precise and pure, is long and drawn out." - Marie, Oenologist Premium Grands Crus
Azores Archipelago or Carruades 2024
A beloved stopover for sailors before their Transatlantic crossing, the Azores form an archipelago of 9 islands, often protected by a magical anticyclone.
For Carruades 2024, we join them on a dashing Ketch, a two-masted boat that requires twice the precision and anticipation to balance in difficult weather. Like a navigator bent over his nautical charts, Louis knows each of these islands of terroir like the back of his hand: his mission is to help these parcels progress! Sharp trajectories, skilful pruning, he keeps a firm grip on the helm of their ripeness despite the rough weather.
When it comes to blending, it's all hands on deck: our old Merlot on clay, Barrat 71 and the old Gandau 56, tireless and always charming, are once again joined by our 4 fantastic parcels on gravel. They are joined by the inevitable Cabernet franc of Passe-temps 62 and the two fine Cabernet-Sauvignons of Tournât 91 and Vigneron 82. Once blended, these 9 parcels that make up the heart of Carruades revealed themselves even better.
Unity is strength!
