The location of Château Grand Puy Ducasse is very special, as it offers the unique feature of being entirely urban, right in the heart of Pauillac and facing the Gironde.
Archives reveal its existence in the 17th century, and its owner at the time added his name Ducasse.
Grand Puy Ducasse is divided into three parts: one part neighbors the Mouton-Rothschild and Lafite-Rothschild vineyards, another part is located at the very place of Grand Puy from which it takes its name, and finally another part on the St Lambert plateau along the Gironde estuary.
This Château covers an area of 40 hectares consisting of siliceous-gravelly soil and subsoil and Garonne gravel, with vines of an average age of 25 years.
Varietal composition: cabernet sauvignon 60%, merlot noir 40%.
Annual production is in the order of 160 to 170 barrels, or 200 to 210,000 bottles.
All harvesting is done by hand and the wine is aged in new barrels in the proportion of 30 to 40%, depending on the vintage for 12 to 16 months before bottling.
"In the glass, the wine has a beautiful purplish color. On the nose, it reveals intense black fruit aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry, underlined by vanilla scents. The palate, relatively woody from the outset, has a powerful body with imposing tannins that are beginning to integrate well. The black fruit aromas unfold greedily and carry us through to the very long finish of woody flavors." - Marie, Oenologue Premium Grands Crus
A vintage of contrasts, 2024 required rigor and adaptation.
After a mild, rainy winter followed by a cool, wet spring, the vines developed slowly under heavy fungal pressure. Fortunately, a hot summer (Sec) enabled phenolic ripening to progress well. The harvest, which began on September 23, revealed freshness and elegant tannins, a sign of a resilient vintage.
The blend is composed of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. Yields reach 43 hl/ha, with an alcoholic strength of 13% and a pH of 3.70.
The wine has a pure bouquet combining blueberry, blackcurrant, plum and a floral touch Rare (violet). On the palate, powdery tannins are well integrated, offering a balanced, full structure. Aromas of graphite, raspberry, pepper and roasting are also present. Tonic acidity supports a fresh, persistent finish. This is a complete wine, both precise and delicious, perfectly vinified despite a delicate vintage.
Harvest dates: Merlot 23/09/24 -> 01/10/24; Petit Verdot 01/10/24 -> 02/10/24; Cabernet Sauvignon 02/10 -> 08/10.
