One of the most beautiful Châteaux of the Médoc, with its slender turrets reflected in a mirror of water, producing a great wine in its image. Such is the Château Pichon Baron on the edge of the Pauillac appellation.
It was in 1694 that Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville, first president of the Parliament of Bordeaux, gave his name to this vineyard of great reputation, which he acquired by marriage with the heiress of the De Rauzan family. He took care before his death to separate Domaine into two parts: one would become Château Pichon Baron and go to his two sons, and while the other would become Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse, intended for his three daughters.
The Château Pichon Baron will obtain the rank of Second Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification established for the Paris World's Fair.
Today it stands on a sumptuous terroir of quaternary gravels that face the Gironde estuary. With a surface area of 73 hectares, it is planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 80% of which are new.
The Domaine has been producing a Second wine since 1983, the Tourelles de Longueville, and another since 2012, the Griffons de Pichon Baron.
The wines of Château Pichon Baron embody the purest expression of Pauillac, harmoniously combining finesse and elegance, as well as purity and depth.
"In its intense garnet color, the wine reveals a fresh, greedy nose with great complexity. Notes of blackberry and blueberry mingle with a delicate woodiness. On the palate, a fresh attack gives way to a full body that nonetheless possesses a certain tension. The aromatic palette, dominated by black fruits, underlines the well-integrated tannins. The long finish is marked by blackberry aromas." - marie, Oenologue Premium Grands Crus
Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is one of the estate's two Seconds wines. Created from the 2012 vintage, it has a pure, straightforward character. The grapes that make up the blend for this wine come mainly from gravelly plots close to the Gironde estuary. Les Griffons is a rich, invigorating experience, full-bodied, straightforward and full of energy. This wine can be cellared for over 20 years, but can be enjoyed now.

Vinification
Sorting was fundamental once again this year to ensure that only perfectly healthy, round berries were picked. To get the best possible result, the pickers carefully selected our harvest, then in the vat room, the sorters fine-tuned this work, before moving on to optical sorting. We used all the techniques at our disposal to make the most of this delicate harvest: gravity loading, light sulfiting combined with yeast-based bioprotection, an indigenous sourdough, low fermentation temperatures and measured Extraction with light pumping-over and delestage. Run-offs took place from October 15 to 24 for the Merlot and from October 23 to 31 for the Cabernet.
Aging: 50% in new barrels, 50% in one-wine barrels for 15 months.
