Perched on the heights of the Pauillac appellation, Château Pontet-Canet is one of the Médoc's most essential crus. Its founder, Jean-François de Pontet, esquire to the king and governor of the Médoc, acquired it in 1725, and a few years later his heirs bought the neighboring land at Canet: thus was born Château Pontet-Canet.
Le Domaine was awarded the title of Cinquième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 wine classification officialized for the Paris Universal Exhibition. A decade later, it was acquired by Herman Cruse, a Bordeaux merchant of Danish origin, and underwent a complete renovation.
It wasn't until Guy Tesseron, who already owned Château Lafon-Rochet to Saint-Estèphe, bought it in 1975 that Domaine began to shine again. His son Alfred would reveal the Extraordinary potential of his terroir from 1994 onwards, converting Domaine to biodynamic farming in particular, thanks to the support of his steward and trusted man Jean-Michel Comme.
Today, it's his daughter Justine Tesseron who continues his work, making Pontet-Canet shine on the wine scene.
Today, Château Pontet-Canet reigns over an 81-hectare vineyard, entirely managed according to biodynamic principles since the 2004 vintage. This makes Domaine a forerunner and benchmark in the world of Bordeaux Grands Crus Classés. It was certified by the Biodyvin and Ecocert labels in 2010, then by the Demeter label in... See more ...
After an exceptionally wet and mild winter, the season got off to a rapid start in optimal conditions. The waterlogged soils provided an ideal environment for the vines. Bud-break was remarkably early. However, heavy rainfall in early April favored the first mildew contaminations. Faced with a rainy spring, extreme vigilance and responsiveness were required to control this pathogen. Cooler-than-normal temperatures slowed vine growth. Fortunately, the return of Sec weather on May 22 offered some respite. Flowering took place under favourable conditions, but the storms of mid-June rekindled the fight against mildew, once again putting the vineyard and our teams to the test. Thanks to rigorous work and controlled management of vigors and weeds, grape losses remained minimal.
The summer was marked by a beneficial drought, a major asset for wine quality. Veraison began in climate Sec, with temperatures in line with ten-year norms. These conditions gradually created water stress, favoring the disappearance of herbaceous aromas and the synthesis of fruity aromas.
At the end of August, unstable skies reappeared and persisted until the end of the harvest. The judicious choice to take the risk of harvesting ripe grapes paid off, giving this vintage every chance of becoming an excellent "Grand Vin".
Harvest dates: September 26 to October 11, 2024
