Created at the end of the 18th century, Château Bellefont-Belcier is ideally located on the south coast of Saint-Emilion, bordering Château Pavie, Château Larcis-Ducasse and Château Tertre Roteboeuf.
The Domaine Bellefont-Belcier originally belonged to a powerful Bordeaux family: at the end of the 18th century, Count Louis-François de Belcier had first founded the vineyard and then, at the beginning of the 19th century, built the Château which he named Bellefont (short for "Belle Fontaine", in reference to the many springs near the Château from the clay-limestone hillside).
The Château Bellefont -Belcier is located in the commune of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes in the Saint-Emilion appellation area Grand Cru. The vineyard extends over 13.5 hectares of vines in a single block. It is divided into three distinct areas: the limestone plateau, the southern clay-limestone slope, the sandy-clay foot of the slope.
On these different types of soil, we find the three great red grape varieties of Bordeaux in the following proportion: 72% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon spread over 28 parcels.
Produced from a 14-hectare organic vineyard on clay-limestone and molasse soils in the Fronsadais region, the 2024 vintage was harvested from September 25 to October 8, with a yield of 35 hl/ha.
The blend comprises 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Vinification was carried out in concrete vats, with reduced use of sulfur, followed by aging divided between 30% new barrels, 30% ovoid foudres and 40% one- and two-wine barrels.
On tasting, the nose opens with a slight reduction before revealing aromas of red and black fruits, violets, graphite and cold ash. On the palate, the wine is precise, dynamic and structured. The fine, chalky tannins are supported by vibrant acidity, bringing freshness and length. The finish is saline, persistent and elegant.
A racy, well-balanced wine with great ageing potential (2029-2049), acclaimed by the critics: James Suckling (95-96), Jane Anson (94), Yves Beck (94-96), Jeb Dunnuck (92-94+). A promising vintage that confirms the steady rise of Domaine.
Harvest date: September 25 to October 8, 2024
