As one of Saint-Emilion's leading vineyard references, Château Canon la Gaffelière embodies the excellence of the great wines of Rive droite de Bordeaux. Situated at the foot of the slope south of the village of Saint-Emilion, this is a vineyard whose existence can be traced back to the 17th century.
But its modern history is inextricably linked to the German noble family of Counts Von Neipperg, who acquired it in 1971. It's a family that has always had an unshakeable link with viticulture, and today Stephan Von Neipperg strives to keep this vineyard and its exceptional terroir at the top of its game, with passion and respect for the environment. In fact, the estate has been certified Organic since 2014.
The Château Canon la Gaffelière was named Grand Cru Classé when the Saint-Emilion classification was created in 1955. It was not until the 2012 edition that it was awarded the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé, confirming the greatness of its wines.
The Château Canon la Gaffelière looks after a 19.5-hectare vineyard planted on clay-limestone and sandy-clay soils at the foot of the hillside. The grape varieties are 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are aged for 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 50 to 80% of which are new.
The estate produces a Second wine, Hauts de Canon La Gaffelière.
The Château Canon la Gaffelière delivers wines of great finesse, elegance, structure and complexity, which leave an indelible impression on anyone who appreciates them.
95-96 Yves Beck - April 2025: "The finesse of the bouquet speaks volumes about the ambitions dedicated to complexity and subtlety. Peony nuances create an inviting symbiosis with fragrances of garrigue, mint and red berries. On the palate, the wine is driven by its structure, freshness and velvety tannins offering precious, elegant support. A sapid, precise and persistent wine focused on finesse" 2028-2049.
94-96 The Wine Independent - May 2025: "Deep garnet-purple colored. Prances out of the glass with showy notes of red cherry pie, red currant jelly, and black raspberries, opening out to suggestions of rose oil, cardamom, and star anise with a touch of forest floor. The light to medium-bodied palate delivers grainy tannins and just enough freshness to support the multi-layered fruit, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note." (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
