Château Valandraud

The Château Valandraud has an unusual history, to say the least. It's a Domaine that was built from scratch by its self-taught founder Jean-Luc Thunevin, a former banker and wine merchant in Saint-Emilion, and his wife Murielle Andraud, with passion and determination.

Wanting to make wine on their own terms, they bought a 0.6-hectare plot in Saint-Emilion's Fongaban valley. The name Domaine was thus inspired by its geographical location, "Val", coupled with Muriel's surname, "andraud".

The release of their first vintage in 1991 was a success. Today, Domaine has grown to a size of 8.8 hectares, with wines born of a combination of tradition, modernity and innovation. A new, state-of-the-art semi-buried vat room, perfectly integrated into the winegrowing landscape, will be built for the 2021 harvest.

The Château Valandraud will be promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé at the 6th edition of the Saint-Emilion classification in 2012, crowning the efforts undertaken by the owners.

The Château Valandraud looks after an 8.8-hectare vineyard planted on clay-limestone soils, and the grape varieties are 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec. The wines are aged from 18 to 30 months in 100% new barrels.

Description Château Valandraud 2024.

Despite capricious weather conditions, the 2024 vintage of Château Valandraud stands out for its remarkable quality, the fruit of the resilience and expertise of our viticultural teams. A mild and exceptionally rainy winter, followed by a wet spring, led to intense mildew pressure from April onwards. In response, rigorous interventions were carried out, including de-budding, early leaf-thinning and maintaining grass cover.

The summer, marked by alternating rainy and sunny spells, delayed the phenolic and aromatic ripening of the grapes, necessitating additional leaf thinning. The harvest, precisely timed thanks to meticulous monitoring of the ripeness and health of the plots, ensured an optimal harvest.

The Château Valandraud 2024 is distinguished by its elegance and balance, offering a vibrant wine with controlled power. Its fresh, expressive aromatic profile blends notes of crunchy red and black berries with the suave mid-palate typical of Domaine. The salivating finish and floral aromas add finesse and freshness, already inviting tasting in its youth.

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
