Synonymous with aromatic finesse and elegance, Château Léoville Poyferré lies to the north of the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation. It was created in 1840 following the various divisions of Domaine de Léoville, and became the property of Baron de Poyferré, who added his name to it.
It was crowned Second Grand Cru Classé in the prestigious 1855 classification. The Cuvelier family, wine merchants, acquired it in 1920. For 40 years, Didier Cuvelier has led the restructuring of the vineyard, respecting the environment and the terroir. His cousin Sara Lecompte Cuvelier took over the reins in 2018.
The vineyard covers 58 hectares of vines, planted with 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet franc. The wines are aged entirely in oak barrels, 80% of which are new, over a period of 18 to 20 months.
Le Pavillon de Poyferré, Second wine of Domaine, is made mainly from Merlot.
The Château Léoville Poyferré is a sublime wine, offering plenty of power and body without losing its subtlety.
Produced from a selective hand-picked harvest from September 24 to October 10, Léoville Poyferré's 2024 vintage reflects the meticulous work of a committed team at the service of a great family terroir. With yields deliberately controlled at 26.4 hL/ha, this cuvée reveals the quintessence of Cabernet Sauvignon (64%), perfectly accompanied by Merlot (27%), Cabernet Franc (8%) and a touch of Petit Verdot (1%).
Right from the blend, the wine impresses with its racy structure and measured density. On the palate, the balance is based on a precise tannic structure, well-integrated freshness (pH 3.71) and an emerging aromatic complexity, already perceptible in its youth.
Cellar work, combining bioprotection, pre-fermentation cold maceration and malolactic fermentation in barrels, prepares the way for 18 to 20 months' ageing in 80% new oak, designed to refine the grain and magnify the substance.
Château Léoville Poyferré 2024 embodies the typical elegance of the great Saint-Juliens, with promising aromatic intensity, measured tension and assured ageing potential. It follows in the footsteps of the vintage's great successes.
