Darroze is a renowned spirits trading house, specializing in exceptional eaux-de-vie and armagnacs. The story of this family-run house is one of passion for craftsmanship, tradition and the relentless pursuit of quality.
The Darroze family has built its reputation on an incredible collection of Armagnacs from the region's finest estates. Each is matured in its own personal piece of oak; the name of the estate, the year of production and the bottling date guarantee this unique diversity. To pRéserver specificities, no blends of Domaines or vintages. So as not to betray the typicities, no "reduction" that would dilute not only the alcoholic strength but also the aromatic power and nuances of the terroir by adding "petites eaux".
The story goes back to the end of the 19th century, when Francis Darroze, a young man with a passion for spirits, began scouring the Armagnac region of southwest France for the best armagnac producers. He was one of the first to realize the importance of pRéserver exceptional quality eaux-de-vie, preserving their authenticity and terroir.
Francis Darroze passed on his passion to his descendants, in particular to Marc Darroze, who played an essential role in the development of the trading house. Domaine Le Pouy, run by Pierre and Josette Biles in Avéron-Bergelle, is one of those iconic estates in Bas-Armagnac from which Francis Darroze selects the finest vintages. The vineyard, covering approximately 12 hectares, is planted on siliceous-clay soils that are particularly well-suited to the production of fine, aromatic eaux-de-vie. This cuvée is made from 100% Ugni Blanc, continuously distilled at a low alcohol content (approximately 56% vol.) by the Ponsolat distillery in Cravancères, then aged for an extended period in local oak barrels.
In the glass, the color is a deep gold with amber hues, a sign of perfectly controlled aging. The initial nose is immediately alluring with its rich, candied notes: roasted apricot, yellow fruit marmalade, and caramelized apple, evoking a still-warm tarte Tatin. As it breathes, sweet spices such as vanilla, cinnamon, and a hint of nutmeg emerge, along with pastry-like notes reminiscent of vanilla flan and crème brûlée. The palate is full-bodied, silky, and remarkably balanced. The fruit remains at the heart of the tasting experience, with flavors of ripe quince, candied melon, and stewed yellow fruits. The aging is remarkably subtle: the oak, very finely integrated, highlights the body without ever overpowering it, lending structure and elegance. The long, harmonious finish reveals delicate notes of rancio, fresh walnuts, dried fruits, and a slight hint of wax, all hallmarks of the maturity of this great Bas-Armagnac.
A 1990 vintage of fine distinction, combining aromatic richness, a refined texture, and depth, in a style typical of the great terroirs of Bas-Armagnac.
