Chanson Père & Fils

Founded in 1750 and located in the historic heart of Beaune, Maison Chanson boasts outstanding wine-making and ageing cellars: the Bastion de l'Oratoire. This defensive tower, built by François I and acquired by the Chanson family after the 1789 Revolution, now houses bottles on four levels, protected by walls averaging eight meters thick.

Bought out by the Bollinger family in 1999, Chanson has expanded its vineyard with the acquisition of magnificent plots in prestigious appellations such as Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru les Chenevottes and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru les Folatières. Today, Chanson offers a precise and qualitative overview of the wines of Bourgogne.

The Domaine Chanson rigorously farms a 43-hectare vineyard on the Côte de Beaune. Known for the richness and diversity of its Beaune Premiers Crus, Chanson holds the monopoly on Clos des Fèves. The house makes it a point of honor to maintain its environment, practicing unclaimed organic viticulture and obtaining High Environmental Value certification since 2015.

Description Chanson Beaune Premier Cru Grèves 2020.

From the largest cru on the central hillside of Beaune, Beaune Premier Cru Grèves du Domaine Chanson is a 100% pinot noir grown on a unique terroir of sand, pebbles and silt, recalling the origin of the name "grèves" derived from "graves". Facing due east on the hillside, this very sunny terroir enables the grapes to ripen quickly.

The 2020 vintage was marked by a mild winter, followed by a spring with summer-like temperatures, resulting in early budburst and vigorous vine growth. The few frosts in May had no significant impact, and the summer, although punctuated by heat waves, began with beneficial rainfall that enabled the vines to resist water stress. Harvesting began on August 24 under a blazing sun, a historically early date in Bourgogne. The red wines of this vintage stand out for their generosity, concentration and excellent definition of terroir.

On tasting, the wine reveals a brilliant ruby color. The nose is intensely aromatic, with notes of ripe black berries such as blackberry and blackcurrant, mixed with a hint of oak. On the palate, the wine is complex and fleshy, with remarkable energy. The texture is silky, supported by well-crafted tannins and generous juice. The finish is beautifully long and delicate.

This wine goes perfectly with roasted or braised meats, veal filet mignon accompanied by mushrooms such as girolles, ceps or truffles, as well as game. Regional cheeses such as Citeaux, Epoisses, Langres or Brillat-Savarin will also sublimate this exceptional wine.

The scores obtained by this vintage testify to its exceptional quality: 17/20 by Jancis Robinson, 92/100 by Burghound and 94/100 by The World of Fine Wine.
