Château Cos d'Estournel

Château Cos d'Estournel

What more recognizable Château in the Saint-Estèphe appellation than Cos d'Estournel with its oriental style and pagodas? An exceptional wine with an identity all its own, and nothing to envy anyone. In 1811, Louis Gaspard d'Estournel acquired several hectares of vines not far from a place called Cos, or "hill of pebbles".

It wasn't long before he was touring the world promoting his wines, even as far away as East India, where they were much appreciated by the maharajas. A reputation that earned him the nickname "Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe". Work then began on Château in 1830, offering the famous Far East-inspired architecture, with pagodas and elephant statutes.

His reputation earned him the title of Second Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition. Owned since 2000 by entrepreneur Michel Reybier, numerous technical renovations have been undertaken, with the aim of constantly striving for excellence and precision.

Today, the vineyard covers 100 hectares of vines, an average age of 45 years, two-thirds of which are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. They are used to produce the grand vin and Second vin, Pagodes de Cos. Some plots, however, are planted with white grape varieties, Sémillon and Sauvignon blanc, used to produce Cos d'Estournel blanc and Second vin, les Pagodes de Cos blanc.

Description G d'Estournel 2023.

North of the Médoc, on the hill of Saint-Estèphe. The majestic Pagodas of Cos d'Estournel are just around the corner. The home of the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe is a real surprise. It's a veritable palace, entirely dedicated to wine. This is how Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel wanted it.
As soon as he inherited a few hectares of vines in 1791, he never stopped enlarging his Domaine and offering him the best techniques. Convinced that he had in his hands an exceptional terroir, this man of taste and adventurer extolled its merits around the world, in India in particular, from where he brought back his inclination for the Orient and eXOtism. In the image of his wine, bewitching and elegant, as much as spicy and powerful, he has taken the gamble of being himself in such a conventional world, cultivating his differences and assuming his choices.
Owned by Michel Reybier since 2000, Cos d'Estournel pursues its destiny, between audacity and humility. Every decision is a risk-taking exercise, in keeping with a visionary philosophy that its founder would not have disavowed. Plot-by-plot cultivation pushed to the limit, demanding innovations in the cellar, a taste for beauty and excellence in a world imbued with discreet elegance: this is the legacy of Louis-Gaspard as it is carried on today by its owner.

Terroir

Located in the northern part of the Médoc vineyards, at the end of the Gironde estuary, the vines thrive in truly privileged conditions. A cool climate coupled with natural ventilation due to the proximity of the ocean, enable the production of fresh, fruity wines.
In a constant quest for excellence, these vines have been planted and grafted for several years now, and the soil is mechanically worked and farmed in a sustainable manner to obtain grapes of optimum quality.

2023, Seductive

From the northern terroir of the northern Médoc, G d'Estournel offers remarkable balance and characteristic freshness. The clay soils and proximity to the Gironde estuary have enabled the Merlot grapes to withstand the heat of early September. The wine is distinguished by its energy, roundness and tension. It has a fleshy structure with notes of peppermint and black cherry.

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
