The Château Valandraud has an unusual history, to say the least. It's a Domaine that was built from scratch by its self-taught founder Jean-Luc Thunevin, a former banker and wine merchant in Saint-Emilion, and his wife Murielle Andraud, with passion and determination.
Wanting to make wine on their own terms, they bought a 0.6-hectare plot in Saint-Emilion's Fongaban valley. The name Domaine was thus inspired by its geographical location, "Val", coupled with Muriel's surname, "andraud".
The release of their first vintage in 1991 was a success. Today, Domaine has grown to a size of 8.8 hectares, with wines born of a combination of tradition, modernity and innovation. A new, state-of-the-art semi-buried vat room, perfectly integrated into the winegrowing landscape, will be built for the 2021 harvest.
The Château Valandraud will be promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé at the 6th edition of the Saint-Emilion classification in 2012, crowning the efforts undertaken by the owners.
The Château Valandraud looks after an 8.8-hectare vineyard planted on clay-limestone soils, and the grape varieties are 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec. The wines are aged from 18 to 30 months in 100% new barrels.

Produced in extremely exclusive quantities on the clay-limestone terroirs of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, the 2025 Valandraud Blanc displays a distinctive character, defined by precision, tension, and aromatic richness. Sauvignon Gris, the grape variety emblematic of the wine’s identity, plays a central role in the blend and imparts to the vintage its full-bodied, textured, and intensely expressive character. Vineyard management and winemaking are based on a highly precise approach. The grapes are harvested by hand and then subjected to a long, gentle press to preserve the fruit’s vibrancy and the finesse of the textures. Ageing on lees with bâtonnage is carried out lot by lot from over forty different plot selections. In 2025, the proportion of terracotta amphorae will increase significantly to further preserve the aromatic purity of the Sauvignons and further refine the precision of the ageing process. Ageing takes place over eight months, with 70% in new barrels and 30% in amphorae.
The wine reveals a particularly bright and complex nose, marked by notes of fresh pineapple, peach, apricot, and white flowers. The aromatic expression, intense yet perfectly controlled, is built on ripe and precise thiols. On the palate, the texture is full-bodied, voluptuous, and perfectly balanced by a finely chiseled acidity. The wine retains a great deal of energy despite the vintage’s natural richness. The long, refined finish lingers on delicate bitter notes that define the identity of Valandraud’s great white wines.
With only 4,000 bottles produced, Valandraud Blanc 2025 combines intensity, precision, and freshness in a style that is both powerful and distinguished, carried by the elegance of the great limestone terroirs of Saint-Émilion.
