In the 12th century, traces of this Château can already be found in the Archives of the Arsac seigneury, owned by the de Montaigne family, the famous French writer and Mayor of Bordeaux in the 16th century.
It borders Châteaux Cantenac-Brown and Brane-Cantenac to the north and Château Giscours to the east. It is situated on one of the Médoc's highest gravelly hilltops, from which it takes its name. Its vineyard is remarkable for two reasons: it's in one piece and it faces due south.
It's a fifth Grand Cru Classé following the prestigious 1855 list.
Varietal composition: Cabernet Sauvignon: 45, Merlot 30%, Cabernet Franc 20% and 5% Petit Verdot.
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, and annual production is in the order of 255 barrels, or around 300,000 bottles.
50% of the wine is aged in new barrels for an average of 18 months, depending on the typicity of the harvest.
The 2025 vintage was marked by particularly hot and dry weather conditions, requiring significant effort to preserve the grapes’ freshness. Careful management of the foliage and soil played a key role in maintaining a balanced ripening process. The harvest, which took place from September 8 to 22, yielded concentrated and perfectly healthy grapes. The final blend, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (65%) and complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, accurately expresses the classic identity of Margaux. Winemaking, carried out in wooden, concrete, and stainless steel tanks, prioritizes gentle extraction and controlled maceration to preserve the fruit’s finesse and purity. Sixteen months of ageing in Bordeaux barrels, 40% of which are new, accompanies the wine with elegance without overpowering its expression.
On the palate, the wine reveals a deep garnet color with violet highlights. The nose captivates with its aromatic intensity, blending ripe black fruits, blackcurrant, and fresh blackberry with delicate floral notes and hints of spice. On the palate, the full-bodied and harmonious attack evolves into a generous, velvety body that retains a lovely freshness despite the vintage’s natural concentration. Gentle extraction techniques have yielded particularly silky tannins, giving the wine an elegant texture and a sensation of great fluidity. The balance between power, richness, and finesse lends the wine great distinction. The long, precise finish prolongs the fruity and spicy notes with beautiful delicacy.
A refined and distinguished Château du Tertre 2025, which elegantly conveys the richness of the vintage while preserving the freshness and grace characteristic of great Margaux wines.
