The Château Giscours combines all the titles of nobility proper to the greatest wines of Margaux. The first written mention of Giscours refers to a fortified keep around 1330, but its history did not really begin until 1552, when Pierre de Lhomme, a wealthy draper from Bordeaux, acquired Domaine and planted the first vines.
In 1847, Château was built in the Renaissance style as we know it today, then gradually its famous park was developed and production tools were modernized.
At the famous 1855 wine classification, Château Giscours was named Third Grand Cru Classé.
Taken over in 1995 by the Jelgersma family, meticulous work was carried out in the vineyard and winery to restore the property's reputation. Today, the vineyard comprises 100 hectares of vines: 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 15 to 17 months in 50% new French oak barrels.
The estate produces a Second wine, La Sirène de Giscours, as well as a third wine classified as Haut-Médoc, the Haut-Médoc de Giscours.
The wines of Château Giscours are synonymous with refinement and aromatic richness, carried on the fruit and apt to wait for long ageing.
The 2025 vintage confirms Giscours’ remarkable upward trajectory in quality and ranks among the estate’s most notable successes. In an early, hot, and relatively dry year, the vineyard benefited from conditions that allowed the grapes to ripen fully while maintaining the balance for which the great Margaux wines are renowned. The blend, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, perfectly reflects the identity of the Giscours terroir. The harvest, carried out from September 3 to 25, allowed each plot to be picked at its peak of ripeness. Following a rigorous selection of the grapes, vinification in concrete and stainless steel tanks prioritized precision and finesse, with long macerations lasting approximately 35 days. Aging continued for 17 months in French oak barrels, half of which were new.
On the palate, Giscours 2025 immediately captivates with its refinement and balance. The bouquet reveals a deep and complex aromatic expression, dominated by perfectly ripe black fruits: blackcurrant, wild blackberry, and blueberry, accompanied by delicate floral nuances, graphite, and a subtly spicy touch. The palate combines density and elegance. The body is full-bodied without ever being heavy, supported by a particularly precise, silky, and finely chiseled tannic structure. The vintage’s natural concentration is perfectly controlled, giving way to a constant sensation of freshness. A saline and mineral backbone runs through the wine, lending it energy, length, and depth. The finish is long, clean, and vibrant, marked by remarkable fruit purity and a lingering freshness that reinforce its aging potential.
More than just a sunny vintage, Giscours 2025 emerges as a Margaux of balance and precision, where power always serves elegance. It evokes the estate’s great classic vintages more than its showy years, with a particularly successful combination of richness, tension, and finesse. A wine built for long-term aging in the bottle, yet one whose harmony is already very evident today.
