It's impossible to talk about Pessac-Léognan's most charming great wines without mentioning Château Latour-Martillac. The Château owes its name to the tower that stands in its courtyard of honor, a vestige of a fortress built in Martillac in the 12th century by the ancestors of philosopher and winemaker Montesquieu.
Le Domaine was acquired in 1871 by Edouard Kressmann, a Bordeaux wine merchant.
Grand Cru Classé in red and white in the 1953 Graves classification, today it's brothers Tristan and Loïc Kressmann who are at the helm, continuing the family tradition of always prioritizing quality over yield on this authentic terroir.
The Château Latour-Martillac vineyard covers 55 hectares of exceptional Pyrenean gravel hillside.
- The red grape varieties are 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The grand vin is aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new. Lagrave-Martillac is the Second red wine.
- The white grape varieties are 60% Sauvignon blanc and 40% Sémillon. The grand vin blanc is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which are new. Lagrave-Martillac is the Second white wine.
The wines of Château Latour-Martillac are particularly elegant, offering sumptuous structure, great harmony and aromatic intensity in both red and white.
The 2025 vintage is the result of an early-season climate pattern that was perfectly managed. The mild, wet winter allowed the soil to recharge effectively with water, providing the vines with solid reserves to withstand a significantly drier season that followed. Budbreak, observed as early as mid-March—about two weeks ahead of schedule—proceeded uniformly under particularly favorable conditions, with no spring frosts for the first time since 2019. The harvest of the reds, which was particularly early, took place from September 4 to 20. The grapes—small, uniform, and in excellent health—allowed for precise extraction, emphasizing the fruit’s vibrancy and the finesse of the structure.
In the cuvée, the vintage reveals a perfect balance: dense yet airy texture, controlled alcohol levels, and preserved acidity. The color is deep, an intense purple, reflecting beautiful concentration without heaviness. The nose opens with distinct aromas of black fruit enriched by floral notes of violet, followed by hints of vanilla and eucalyptus that add complexity and freshness. The overall impression is precise, pure, and expressive. On the palate, the attack is supple and refined. The texture is velvety, supported by fine, ripe, and perfectly integrated tannins. The mid-palate reveals crisp, juicy black fruit, underpinned by a fresh structure that extends the tasting experience. The finish is long, harmonious, and very clean, leaving an impression of remarkable precision and balance.
Despite the sunny character of the vintage, the 2025 at Latour-Martillac stands out for its structuring freshness and the clear expression of the fruit, offering a wine that is at once concentrated, elegant, and already particularly harmonious.
