A magnificent property in the Saint-Julien appellation, Château Lagrange now occupies an almost intimate place in the hearts of wine enthusiasts. Although its history dates back to the 17th century, it wasn't until 1796 that Château Lagrange underwent tremendous expansion under the impetus of its owner Jean-Valère Cabarrus, the finance minister of Napoléon I in Spain.
The Château Lagrange will obtain the rank of Third Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition.
The Japanese Suntory group will acquire the Domaine in 1983, and spectacular technical renovations will be undertaken in the winery and vineyard to restore Lagrange's reputation.
Situated on two gravelly hilltops, the vineyard of Château Lagrange covers 118 hectares of vines, of which 68% are Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.
The estate produces a Second wine, Fiefs de Lagrange, as well as a third wine in Haut-Médoc, Pagus de Lagrange.
The vineyard also boasts 11 hectares of white grape varieties for the production of their white wine Sec, les Arums de Lagrange, of which 80% is Sauvignon blanc, 10% Sémillon and 10% Sauvignon gris.
The wines of Château Lagrange are renowned for their elegance and complexity, where the finesse of the tannins envelop a fully fruity palate.
Les Fiefs de Lagrange 2025 brilliantly illustrates the accessible and refined style of Les Fiefs de Lagrange, in a sunny vintage where the pursuit of balance took precedence over power. Grown on the gravelly terroirs of Saint-Julien, this second wine benefits from all the technical and plot-specific expertise of Château Lagrange.Following a mild winter and a hot, particularly dry summer, the vines produced very small berries, naturally concentrated in color, tannins, and aromatic intensity. The more temperate temperatures in September helped preserve the freshness and tension essential to the vintage’s balance. The limited yields resulted in a dense yet harmonious structure, without excess.
The harvest, carried out by hand from September 8 to 24, underwent meticulous selection in the vineyard followed by optical sorting in the cellar. Plot-by-plot vinification, conducted in the estate’s temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, prioritizes gentle extraction to preserve the fruit’s vibrancy and the finesse of the tannins. Aging lasts 13 months, divided between one- to three-year-old barrels, 10% new oak, and a portion in amphorae, which adds precision and extra freshness.
The nose reveals generous aromas of ripe black fruit, crisp cherry, and fresh plum, accompanied by spicy and slightly floral notes. The palate captivates with its silky body, velvety texture, and perfectly integrated fine tannins. The wine retains a lovely freshness and remarkable precision despite the sunny character of the vintage. The long, savory finish prolongs a sensation of harmony and elegance.
Harvested from September 8 to 24.
