"The wine of kings, the king of wines" is the motto that adorns the label of Château Gruaud Larose, one of the finest wines in the Saint-Julien appellation. Founded by Abbé Gruaud in 1725, in 1781 he bequeathed it to his nephew, Chevalier de Larose, who gave it his name.
Gained the title of Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it has been owned by the Merlaut family since 1997. The 82-hectare vineyard is planted on deep Garonne gravel outcrops, and is planted with 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. This type of terroir is ideal for producing wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Sarget de Gruaud Larose is the Second wine of the Domaine, vinified with the same care.
The wines of Château Gruaud Larose are noble, racy and complex, allowing fruit and finesse to express themselves, confirming its Second status.
This vintage is characterized by its sunny, concentrated style, shaped by a particularly dry year with limited rainfall. This water stress, combined with high summer temperatures, resulted in small, dense berries, giving rise to intense, structured wines with great aromatic depth. The work of plot-by-plot and intra-plot selection played a central role in the precision of this vintage. Winemaking was carried out in small, temperature-controlled wooden tanks ranging from 55 to 130 hl, allowing for an extremely nuanced assessment of each lot. Fermentations, conducted between 24 and 28°C with rigorously selected yeasts, resulted in tailored extractions, adjusted daily through twice-daily tastings of each cuvée.
On the nose, the wine reveals a deep expression of ripe black fruits, dominated by blackcurrant and blackberry, accompanied by spicy, woody, and slightly smoky notes. With aeration, the wine gains complexity with hints of cedar, licorice, and graphite. On the palate, the attack is full-bodied and velvety. The tannic structure, powerful yet refined, supports a concentrated body without ever losing balance. The vintage’s natural freshness brings tension and length, giving the wine real dynamism despite its density. The finish, persistent and elegant, reveals great depth as well as remarkable aromatic precision. Eighteen months of ageing in new French oak barrels complements this structure without masking the terroir’s identity.
Gruaud Larose 2025 thus combines power, intensity, and elegance in a style deeply rooted in Saint-Julien, made for long-term aging.
The 2025 vintage marks Château Gruaud Larose’s 300th vintage. To celebrate this unique occasion, the bottle will be enhanced with a special screen print commemorating three centuries of passion, expertise, and winemaking history. It will be available in standard, magnum, double-magnum, jeroboam, and imperial sizes.
Harvest from September 3 to 20.
