The construction of Château Coutet dates back to the end of the 13th century as illustrated by its tower of similar design to those of the military constructions of the English occupation in Guyenne.
It is a Premier Cru Classified according to the prestigious list of 1855.
It is a Sauternes-Barsac with an average vineyard age of 40 years and a grape variety split as follows: Semillon 75%, Sauvignon 23% and Muscadelle 2%.Its soils vary between reddish clay soil interspersed with fine gravel and Aeolian sands resting on a limestone subsoil.
The entire vineyard is a small 40 hectares for a production of about 50 barrels or about 60,000 bottles.
All the grapes are harvested by hand and the wine is aged entirely in new barrels for about 18 months before bottling.
As a Premier Grand Cru Classé in Barsac since 1855, Château Coutet has produced a vintage of great precision, shaped by contrasting weather conditions that were particularly conducive to the expression of sweet wines. After an early budbreak in early April, the season progressed toward a hot, dry summer marked by a significant water deficit. These conditions promoted concentration in the berries while preserving a lovely freshness thanks to relatively cool nights. The gradual appearance of morning fogs starting in mid-September allowed for the even development of Botrytis cinerea. The harvest, conducted with great care in several successive passes beginning on September 17, yielded perfectly ripe grapes, a blend of sun-dried and botrytized berries, ensuring richness and complexity.
On the nose, the wine is immediately intense and characterful, revealing all the nobility of botrytis. Aromas of fresh quince and ripe apricot dominate, quickly enriched by more exotic notes of candied mango. The overall impression is expressive, precise, and particularly alluring. On the palate, true to the Barsac style, it combines freshness and density with great precision. The attack is full-bodied, carried by a generous sweetness, quickly balanced by a structuring liveliness. The wine displays beautiful aromatic richness, with notes of quince paste and toasted hazelnut, which evolve toward a more mineral expression. The finish, long and taut, stretches out elegantly, marked by a lingering freshness and a subtle minerality that brings depth and dimension.
A 2025 Coutet that is both powerful and refined, where richness, freshness, and precision harmonize to offer a sweet wine of great distinction.
Harvested from September 17 to October 14.
