The House Louis Roederer is one of the names that comes up when we talk about the great houses of Champagne, being still one of the Rares to remain family owned for more than two centuries now.
Reigning over a vineyard of 240 hectares classified on sumptuous terroirs in Premiers Crus and Grands Crus, the House Louis Roederer has never ceased to offer generous Champagnes that embellish all occasions.
It was in 1833 that Louis Roederer inherited his uncle's house: the house of Champagne Dubois Père et Fils in Reims, which he had founded in 1776. From then on, he chose to take the habits and customs of the region in hand and showed great concern for controlling all the stages of production of his Champagne. At the time, marketing was the business of the wine merchants, while the vineyard belonged entirely to the winegrowers. Thus, in 1845, Louis Roederer bought about fifteen hectares of vineyards classified as Grand Cru and acquired the status of winemaker-negociant in order to reconcile the two trades.
In 1876, Louis Roederer II, who succeeded his father following his death in 1870, created at the request of Tsar Alexander II a special vintage for the exclusive consumption of the Tsars of... See more ...
Collection 245 of Louis Roederer reflects a singular 2020, which follows a climatic pattern similar to that of 2019. A mild, wet winter prepared the vines for a summer Sec punctuated by several heat waves. A gloomy June, however, offered a wet break between dry spells, creating conditions conducive to optimal grape ripening. Despite the heat waves, temperatures and light levels in 2020 were generally in line with annual averages, enabling the production of ripe, well-balanced wines. Harvesting began on August 22 and ended on September 1.
This cuvée is made from a complex blend of 41% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 24% Meunier, produced in equal proportions from the house's emblematic terroirs: Rivière, Montagne and Côte. To guarantee the continuity and authenticity of the Roederer style, this blend is enriched by a "perpetual Réserve", with wood-aged wines that bring structure and depth.
To the eye, Collection 245 presents a beautiful golden yellow color, animated by a fine, dynamic effervescence.
On the nose, it reveals concentrated lemon aromas, accompanied by sweet, floral notes reminiscent of pollen and almond petals. There are also hints of harvest and smoky notes, a sign of exceptional fruit maturity and great aromatic complexity.
On the palate, this cuvée is distinguished by a velvety, full-bodied texture, supported by a fine bubble that brings a slightly saline sensation. The body is juicy and concentrated, perfectly balanced by a mineral, almost chalky freshness that lends an enchanting sensation of vivacity. The long, chiselled finish is enhanced by smoky, woody nuances that prolong the taste experience.
The 7 g/l dosage accentuates the balance between aromatic intensity and structure, without ever weighing the wine down. Collection 245 embodies a new chapter in the history of Louis Roederer, marked by a unique sensory exploration firmly rooted in the House's identity. This Champagne, both refined and complex, is a tribute to the diversity of its terroirs and the mastery of blending.
