Mailly

The village of Mailly was classified Grand Cru at the beginning of the 20th century. This is where Champagne Mailly is located, in the heart of Montagne de Reims and precisely 14km from the eponymous town.

Founded in 1929 by several winegrowing families, its history is resolutely distinctive, illustrating the ambition and dynamism that has always reigned in the Champagne region. Today, Maison Mailly continues to shine thanks to its splendid cuvées that combine finesse and elegance.

What is the history of Maison de Champagne Mailly?

When the Great Depression hit France in 1929, a total of 25 winegrowing families decided to face up to it by joining forces. They founded the Société de Producteurs de Mailly Champagne and chose to make Champagne wines using only grapes from their village classified as Grand Cru, with the aim of glorifying this terroir already considered exceptional at the time. Brought together by these difficult beginnings, the winemakers succeeded in making their Champagne known throughout France, and from the 1960s onwards, the commercial expansion of Maison Mailly became a great success.

What is the terroir of Maison Mailly?

The village of Mailly is surrounded by the famous Grands Crus de Ludes, Verzenay and Verzy. Maison Mailly currently has 70 hectares of vines in this village alone. The grape varieties are 75% Pinot Noir and... See more ...

Description Mailly Exception Blanche 2016.

If we had to sum up the 2016 vintage it would be: frost, hail, rain and disease. Without a very fine September, the harvest would have been catastrophic. It remains a year with very heterogeneous quality; schematically we can say that the Pinot Meunier of Vallée de la Marne and the Pinot Noir of Montagne de Reims fared rather well, wines more on power than finesse. As for the Chardonnay, it was harvested late, after the reds (an exceptional event). Only grapes harvested on terroirs classified as Grand Cru can lay claim to a great vintage, and even more so in Côte des blancs, where the strong minerality produced a harvest of very high quality.

The Exception Blanche cuvée from Maison Mailly is an unprecedented cuvée. Exceptional in 2 ways: this is a Blanc de blancs, whereas the cuvées of Mailly are built on Pinot Noir on the one hand, and on the other, the cooperative has exceptionally "imported" Chardonnay Grand Cru from Côte des blancs, which is blended in equal parts (50/50) with Chardonnay from the finest parcels of Mailly.

La robe reveals a straw yellow color with sparkling golden highlights, enlivened by a string of fine, abundant bubbles. The nose opens with soft notes of lime blossom, white peach and melon, followed by richer aromas of nectarine, candied citrus, brioche and hazelnut, as well as more dynamic notes of bergamot and ginger. The finish is underscored by chalky, saline and lemony notes, making it long and intense.

This Exception Blanche 2016 cuvée from Mailly, a subtle harmony between minerality and roundness, will pair perfectly with Marennes Oléron oysters for that "little side" of hazelnut, or at the opposite end of the spectrum with a simple apricot tart.

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
