It was in 1915 that Armand-Raphaël Graser, then a wine merchant in Alsace, left his native region to join Champagne and set up in Damery, in an 18th-century building with typical Champagne architecture, the company's current head office. He began producing Champagne under the brand name "AR Lenoble", "A.R." for his initials and "Lenoble" as a tribute to the nobility of Champagne wines.
In 1947, his son Joseph then succeeded him, then in 1973, on Joseph's retirement, the House passed into the hands of Jean-Marie Malassagne, Armand-Raphaël's grandson, who himself in 1993 handed over the keys to the house to his daughter Anne and son Antoine, the 4th generation at the helm of this very fine House.
Today, in order to pursue its development, the company has decided to open up its capital to the Frère-Gallienne family's FG Bros holding company, which owns stakes in Château Cheval Blanc in Saint-Emilion. Antoine Malassagne "remains associated and operationally involved to ensure the continuity of the work accomplished alongside his sister Anne over three decades.
The 2012 vintage stands out as one of the region's most successful, almost miraculous given the unfavorable weather conditions. Despite these challenges, the grapes, smaller than usual, were picked in perfect health, with an almost total absence of grey rot. Phenolic balances proved excellent, and although yields were half the normal range, fluctuating between 6,000 and 7,000 kilos per hectare, the quality obtained was quite simply fabulous. The vinification of this vintage was carried out with great care, including ageing in vats and undergrowth (20%), followed by over ten years of maturation in cellars, sheltered from climatic variations. This process has resulted in exceptional aromatic complexity and depth.
On tasting, the nose blossoms with intense pastry notes. This cuvée then reveals hints of toast, honey and candied fruit, such as apricot. Gradually, hints of fresh hazelnuts appear, enriching the whole. On the palate, the fiery expression harmonizes perfectly with the freshness of a Blanc de blancs. Candied citrus fruits bring vivacity and combine with aniseed and menthol flavors to form a balanced structure. The lively, dynamic finish is lined with a delicately creamy envelope, offering remarkable persistence.
This 2012 vintage goes wonderfully well with a variety of refined dishes. It's ideal with seafood puff pastry, brioche sausage, turbot filet with saffron, poularde with morel mushrooms, fine apricot tart or lemon meringue pie.
