In the early 1900s, Alfred Bonville took the ambitious gamble of buying plots of vines at a time when the Phylloxera crisis had raged just a few years earlier. This bold move paid off, as his son Franck Bonville founded the eponymous Champagne house in the early 1930s, which is still in the hands of his successors today. The Champagnes produced carry a history and are among the most qualitative of the Côte des blancs.
In 1937, Alfred Bonville and his son Franck acquired a winegrower's house in the heart of Avize on Côte des blancs in order to make their own Champagne, but it wasn't until the aftermath of the Secsecond world war that Franck began to market the first cuvées under his own name and to expand the Domaine on the Avize terroir. In 1970, their son Gilles and his wife Ingrid joined the family business and modernized the technical tools with more appropriate technology. Their son Olivier, with a degree in oenology and extensive winemaking experience in Corsica and Germany, joined them in 1996, representing the fourth generation. It was also at this time that Gilles decided to manage the vineyard in a sustainable way.
House Franck Bonville specializes in Cuvées Blanc de blancs en Grand Cru d'Avize, one of the most prestigious terroirs of the Côte de Blancs. Located in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, Franck Bonville has, for several generations, cultivated a precise and luminous interpretation of Chardonnay. Based in Oger, a village classified as a Grand Cru, the house strives to subtly reveal the chalky character of this iconic terroir, where mineral tension naturally harmonizes with the fruit’s richness. True to a plot-by-plot approach with minimal intervention, the house favors understated winemaking techniques to allow the purity of the grape and the terroir’s character to shine through. The Franck Bonville Pur Oger 2019 brilliantly embodies this philosophy. A blend of two plots located in the Oger terroir, this Blanc de Blancs reveals a full-bodied and expressive personality upon opening, driven by the sun-ripened character of the vintage.
Vinified in stainless steel tanks with alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, then aged for five years on lees under cork before disgorgement in the fall of 2025, this champagne now combines energy, depth, and refinement.
The nose opens with notes of ripe white fruit, juicy pear, and vine peach, enhanced by hints of candied citrus, acacia blossom, and a delicate brioche-like touch resulting from its long aging on lees. On the palate, the attack is caressing, almost creamy, before a more incisive structure stretches the wine with precision. The low dosage preserves the Chardonnay’s crispness and highlights Oger’s signature style: a remarkable balance between generous body and chalky tension. The texture, enveloping yet never heavy, gradually gives way to a salty, tangy finish of great persistence.
