What connoisseur of Champagnes doesn't know Maison Laurent-Perrier, whose sumptuous cuvées possess an almost refreshing taste of history? A veritable benchmark within the circle of great Champagne houses, Maison Laurent-Perrier has always demonstrated an innovative spirit, displaying a very distinctive style of finesse and elegance for two centuries now.
It was towards the end of the First Empire, in 1812, that André-Michel Pierlot, a former cooper and bottler from Chigny-les-Roses, settled in Tours-sur-Marne as a wine merchant for Champagne. Tours-sur-Marne is a picturesque village located at the crossroads of the Marne's three main wine-growing regions: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des blancs, and is one of only 17 communes to be classified as Grand Cru. In particular, he acquired two plots of land, "Les Plaisances" and "La Tour Glorieux", on which he built his own house.
His son Alphonse succeeded him, but as the latter had no children, it was his cellar master Eugène Laurent who became the owner in 1881. The 2018 vintage from Laurent-Perrier continues the house’s tradition of excellence, renowned for its style characterized by freshness, purity, and elegance. Hailing from a sunny and bountiful year in Champagne, this vintage expresses both maturity and balance, with beautifully defined fruit.
Crafted from a rigorous selection of crus, primarily Chardonnay complemented by Pinot Noir, this champagne benefits from precise vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve its aromatic integrity. Malolactic fermentation is generally carried out to round out the balance, followed by extended aging on the lees in the cellar, allowing the wine to gain complexity and finesse. The measured dosage highlights the wine’s natural harmony without compromising its freshness.
On tasting, the wine displays a beautiful golden hue, enlivened by fine, persistent effervescence. The nose opens with clear, expressive aromas of white fruit and ripe citrus, accompanied by delicate brioche and slightly toasted notes from the aging process. The overall impression is one of precision and elegance. The palate is full-bodied and structured, with perfect balance. The fruit shines through brilliantly, supported by a creamy texture and lovely tension. The long, fresh finish extends the fruity and pastry notes with great delicacy.
A 2018 vintage that is both rich and refined, perfectly illustrating the house’s style: a champagne of balance, precision, and pleasure.
