Established since 1763 in the renowned terroir of Chigny-les-Roses, Maison Cattier is one of the oldest and most respected family-owned houses in the Montagne de Reims. With artisanal expertise passed down through thirteen generations, this independent house excels in the art of crafting Premier Cru cuvées of unparalleled richness, fruitiness, and consistency.
Today, the House proudly upholds its high standards under the leadership of Alexandre Cattier, who embodies the estate’s winemaking expertise. The vineyard spans some thirty hectares, ideally situated in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, where Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir find their ideal terroir. One of the house’s greatest treasures lies underground: its cuvées age in historic chalk cellars among the deepest in the region, dug out over four levels to provide absolute freshness during aging.
The strength of Cattier champagnes lies in their masterfully balanced vinosity and innate richness. A pioneer in eco-responsible viticulture (HVE-certified), the house prioritizes rigorous soil management to preserve the fruit’s brilliance. While the family’s elite technical expertise is celebrated worldwide—it notably oversees the production of the famous Armand de Brignac prestige cuvées—the eponymous range stands out for its silky texture and remarkably satiny bubbles, born of long aging in the cellar.
Made exclusively from black grape varieties sourced from the finest terroirs of the Montagne de Reims, Cattier’s Blanc de Noirs Premier Cru reveals a full-bodied, rich, and particularly elegant style. Dominated by Pinot Noir and complemented by Meunier, it combines aromatic depth, a silky texture, and perfectly balanced freshness. The blend consists of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Meunier, enriched by 35% reserve wines that add complexity and stylistic continuity. After more than four years of aging on the lees, the wine gains in fullness and refinement while retaining remarkable energy. The moderate dosage of 7 g/L highlights the cuvée’s natural balance.
The color displays a beautiful, luminous light gold hue. In the glass, the bubbles are particularly fine, regular, and elegant, contributing to the sensation of precision and delicacy. The nose immediately captivates with its freshness and aromatic richness. The initial notes evoke exotic fruits, notably ripe mango and apricot, quickly joined by hints of candied orange and dark fruits such as blackcurrant, blackberry, and blueberry. With aeration, the bouquet gains depth with spicy touches of mild pepper and gingerbread, complemented by rich notes of pie crust, vanilla, and toasted hazelnut. The attack on the palate is full-bodied and structured, carried by a silky, enveloping texture. The mid-palate develops generous flavors of blackberry, black plum, and ripe red berries. Gradually, more complex nuances of stewed strawberry, milk chocolate, and blond tobacco emerge, adding depth and sophistication. The wine retains a lovely freshness, avoiding any heaviness despite its aromatic richness. The long, savory finish lingers with persistent notes of morello cherry, black fruits, and lightly toasted hazelnut, with a subtly spicy touch that elegantly prolongs the tasting experience.
At the table, this Blanc de Noirs Premier Cru proves particularly versatile. It pairs very well with beetroot or avocado verrines, cream-braised poultry, game with cranberries, or lightly smoked dishes. Its rich, indulgent character also makes it a perfect match for desserts such as a Paris-Brest, a dried fruit tart, or pastries with a hint of praline.
