Established since 1763 in the renowned terroir of Chigny-les-Roses, Maison Cattier is one of the oldest and most respected family-owned houses in the Montagne de Reims. With artisanal expertise passed down through thirteen generations, this independent house excels in the art of crafting Premier Cru cuvées of unparalleled richness, fruitiness, and consistency.
Today, the House proudly upholds its high standards under the leadership of Alexandre Cattier, who embodies the estate’s winemaking expertise. The vineyard spans some thirty hectares, ideally situated in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, where Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir find their ideal terroir. One of the house’s greatest treasures lies underground: its cuvées age in historic chalk cellars among the deepest in the region, dug out over four levels to provide absolute freshness during aging.
The strength of Cattier champagnes lies in their masterfully balanced vinosity and innate richness. A pioneer in eco-responsible viticulture (HVE-certified), the house prioritizes rigorous soil management to preserve the fruit’s brilliance. While the family’s elite technical expertise is celebrated worldwide—it notably oversees the production of the famous Armand de Brignac prestige cuvées—the eponymous range stands out for its silky texture and remarkably satiny bubbles, born of long aging in the cellar.
Produced without any dosage, Cattier’s Brut Nature Premier Cru precisely expresses the purity of the fruit and the character of the great terroirs of the Montagne de Reims. Made primarily from red grape varieties sourced mainly from Ludes, Chigny-les-Roses, and Rilly-la-Montagne, it combines intensity, tension, and richness with remarkable clarity. The blend consists of 52% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay, and 16% Meunier, enriched by 36% reserve wines that add depth and stylistic continuity. After more than three years of aging in the cellar, the wine gains complexity while retaining great energy. The total absence of dosage particularly highlights the quality of the raw material as well as the precision of the blend.
The wine displays an elegant golden-yellow color. In the glass, a delicate stream of fine bubbles enlivens the tasting with finesse and consistency. The nose is fresh, precise, and rich. Initial notes evoke biscuit and lightly buttered bread, quickly accompanied by aromas of fresh pear and lime. With aeration, the bouquet gains complexity with delicate spicy and vanilla notes that add depth and elegance. The attack on the palate is lively and dynamic, driven by an immediately perceptible freshness. Citrus flavors, particularly lime, bring a lot of tension before giving way to rounder notes of ripe pear. Gradually, spicy and slightly toasty nuances emerge, leading to a lingering finish marked by aromas of toasted brioche and a lovely mineral sensation. The finish, long and refined, retains remarkable freshness while developing a subtle, perfectly controlled richness.
Particularly at home at the table thanks to its taut and precise profile, this Brut Nature Premier Cru is the ideal accompaniment to a seafood platter, a citrus-infused sea bass ceviche, or scallops. It also pairs very well with a young Comté cheese aged 12 to 18 months, highlighting its finesse and texture.
