France - Champagne - Extra brut - Grand Cru - Champagne Philipponnat

A Grand Cruvintage Champagne from Philipponnat, the Cuvée 1522 Extra Brut 2019 showcases the heritage of Aÿ in a blend dominated by Pinot Noir. Champagne Philipponnat

For 5 centuries now, the Philipponnat family has been making its mark on the land of Champagne. The House Philipponnat was founded in 1522 on the lands of Aÿ, where all generations have succeeded one another. Possessing a unique historical and viticultural heritage, it reigns today over a vineyard of 20 hectares classified as Premier Cru and Grand Cru in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay.

The House Philipponnat produces exceptional vintages that express the richness of their terroir, shining with elegance and purity.

What is the history of Maison Philipponnat?

April de Philipponnat was a soldier in the army of François I, and was granted lands in Aÿ by the king as a reward for his exploits at the Battle of Marignan in 1515. The Philipponnats will thus devote themselves over the generations to the elaboration of Champagnes wines, and acquire at the beginning of the XXth century cellars dug in the XVIIIth century in Château of Mareuil, a village classified in Premier Cru. These cellars are still today an exceptional heritage.

In 1997, the House Philipponnat will be acquired by the group of Champagnes Lanson-BCC, but retains its family heritage. Charles Philipponnat is now its general manager.

What is the terroir of Maison Philipponnat?

House Philipponnat operates a 20-hectare vineyard classified as Premier Cru and Grand Cru in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay. The vines are worked with the greatest respect for the soil and the environment, in particular by the use of draught horses for the ploughing. The House Philipponnat... See more ...

Philipponnat Cuvée 1522 Extra Brut 2019: a prestige cuvée from the House’s finest terroirs

The Cuvée 1522 is the flagship cuvée of the House of Champagne Philipponnat, whose roots in Aÿ date back to the year that gives it its name. The 2019 vintage, blended from a selection of the House’s finest terroirs—including the historic Léon vineyard in Aÿ—combines 77% Pinot Noir from the Grands Crus of Aÿ, Mailly, and Verzy, with 23% Chardonnay from Mesnil-sur-Oger. The Extra-Brut dosage of 4.25 g/L and six years of aging on the lees define the character of this cuvée: vinous, precise, and built for the table.

Tasting the Cuvée 1522 Extra Brut 2019: Profile, Pairings, and peak drinking window

The Tasting

The color is golden, with beautiful intensity, featuring fine bubbles and a persistent stream of foam—evidence of its long aging on lees. On the nose, the initial aromas evoke iodine notes and a slight smoky hint, characteristic of the great terroirs of Aÿ. As it breathes, the profile broadens to include ripe black fruits—blackcurrant and wild blackberry—accented by subtle pepper and oriental spices. Partial ageing in oak adds a brioche-like nuance and a discreet woody depth. On the palate, the attack is full-bodied and fresh, with a creamy texture that is never heavy. The structure, supported by lively acidity—enhanced by the absence of malolactic fermentation in 43% of the wines—underpins a generous aromatic development. The persistent finish unfolds notes of black fruit, damp chalk, and delicate spices in a long, lingering aftertaste.

Food and Wine Pairings

The vinous character of the dominant Pinot Noir and the structure of this vintage champagne make it a natural pairing for fine dining. It pairs perfectly with roasted turbot, line-caught sea bass in a herb crust, or delicate shellfish such as Breton lobster. Bresse chicken with morels or a pairing featuring caviar and delicate spices also reveal the full complexity of the 2019.

Aging Potential

With a projected aging potential of at least ten years, the 2019 Cuvée 1522 can be enjoyed today for its generous fruitiness, but will benefit from being cellared until 2030 and beyond to reach full maturity. This aging potential is based on the acidity preserved by the decision to keep 43% of the wines without malolactic fermentation, six years of autolysis on the lees, and the natural richness of a sun-drenched vintage. Over time, the notes of black fruit will gradually give way to nuances of candied fruit, blond tobacco, and pastry. Serve at 10–12°C with a meal, in a tulip-shaped glass that allows the aromatic bouquet to unfold.

Philipponnat’s historic vineyard and expertise: the birth of the Cuvée 1522

The Vintage in the Vineyard

The 2019 vintage in Champagne was marked by a steady spring followed by a warm, sunny summer, promoting slow and complete ripening of the grapes. Cool nights preserved the berries’ natural acidity, a crucial factor for the balance of great champagnes. On the chalky terroirs of Aÿ, the Pinot Noir reached remarkable ripeness, concentrating black fruit notes of great clarity. In Mesnil-sur-Oger, the Chardonnay provided the chalky precision that gives structure to the blend. The harvest, carried out by hand in accordance with Champagne tradition, allowed for the selection of grapes at their ideal ripeness.

Cellar Work

The grapes from the selected plots, including the Léon vineyard in Aÿ, are pressed using the traditional Champagne method to extract only the finest fraction of the juice. Twenty percent of the base wines are partially aged in oak, adding extra texture and aromatic complexity. Forty-three percent of the wines are vinified without malolactic fermentation, preserving a lively acidity that gives the wine its structure. After blending under the signature of Maison Champagne Philipponnat, the bottling process triggers the second fermentation according to the traditional Champagne method. The cuvée is then aged for six years on slats, allowing for a slow and gradual autolysis of the lees. Disgorgement is followed by an Extra-Brut dosage of 4.25 g/L, a deliberate choice to highlight the wine’s character and the precision of the fruit.
