In 1909, the ancestors of the Forgeron family settled on the land of Grande Champagne at a place called "Chez Richon" not far from Segonzac.
Small capital of the Grande Champagne, classified Premier Cru of the Cognac region, Segonzac has a worldwide reputation, thanks to its hillsides which probably saw, but nothing proves, the rise of the reputation of its wines and subsequently, in the 1610s, of its brandies, later called in the second half of the 19th century Cognac.
The fourth generation still lives here today and it's the two brothers who are at the helm, one more focused on monitoring the vineyard, the other more commercially oriented.
The vineyard covers some 24 hectares, 70% of which are on plains and 30% on hillsides, the whole planted to 23 hectares of Ugni-Blanc and one hectare of Folle Blanche, the two main grape varieties for Cognac authorized by law.
It was only in 1977 that the first bottle appeared on the markets.
A force of nature, shaped by over 30 years of aging. Hailing from the prestigious Grande Champagne terroir—the appellation’s Premier Cru—Michel Forgeron’s Cognac Barrique 89 is an exceptional offering for connoisseurs of authentic, unadulterated spirits. Distilled in 1989, this very old Cognac (classified as Hors d’Âge) is a cask-strength (Single Barrique) spirit. This means it reached its alcohol content entirely naturally during its long rest in the cellars of the family estate, without any dilution with water or complex blending with other vintages. The result? A bottle with rare aromatic power, which purely expresses the identity of its prestigious year of distillation.
Appearance: A superb reddish-orange hue, brilliantly luminous, adorned with deep golden highlights that bear witness to its decades spent in wood.
On the nose: The initial nose opens with noble woody aromas, dominated by cedar. Very quickly, a bouquet of sweet spices takes over (cinnamon, black pepper), supported by rich, sweet notes of quince and candied fruit.
On the palate: Despite its high alcohol content, the attack is surprisingly supple. The palate reveals a beautifully textured, woody roundness. Carried by the natural power of the cask-strength spirit, the aromas explode with intensity.
The finish is masterful, with exceptional length.
To fully appreciate the volcanic power of this bottle, enjoy it as a digestif, ideally paired with a square of 80% dark chocolate. The chocolate’s bitterness and cocoa create a striking contrast with the candied fruit notes and woodiness of the Cognac. For connoisseurs, its structure and intensity also make it an ideal pairing for a full-bodied cigar.
