Pol Roger

Founded in 1849 in Épernay, Maison Pol Roger is one of the most prestigious Champagne houses. It was founded by Pol Roger, a young man of 18 with a passion for wine. The house quickly made a name for itself with the quality of its cuvées and conquered international markets, notably the UK, where it has become an essential reference.

What grape varieties does Pol Roger use?

Pol Roger mainly uses three grape varieties emblematic of Champagne: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Pinot Noir provides structure and power, Pinot Meunier offers roundness and fruitiness, while Chardonnay confers elegance and finesse. The house is particularly renowned for its well-balanced blends that bring out the best in each grape variety.

What is the winemaking process like at Pol Roger?

Winemaking at Pol Roger is marked by a respect for tradition and a constant quest for quality. The grapes are gently pressed to Extra extract the purest juice. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by partial or total malolactic fermentation, depending on the cuvée. The wine is then bottled with a liqueur de tirage for the prise de mousse, before aging on laths for several years.

What are the particularities of ageing Pol Roger wines?

Pol Roger wines benefit from prolonged ageing on laths, well beyond legal requirements. This allows the aromas to develop fully and the bubbles to become finer. The house also uses manual riddling for certain cuvées,... See more ...

Description Pol Roger Rich.

Pol Roger Cuvée Rich Demi-Sec (dosage: 34g/l) is a bold creation, designed to appeal to lovers of generous, sweet champagnes. Launched in 2001, this cuvée is positioned halfway between dry and demi-sec, offering a perfect balance between sweetness and natural acidity. Its blend, composed of 33% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay, and 33% Pinot Meunier, reflects the excellence and complexity of the Champagne terroirs.

The vinification of Cuvée Rich follows a rigorous process that respects the traditions of Maison Pol Roger:

  • Delicate pressing of the grapes, followed by double cold settling (6°C) to preserve the finesse of the aromas.
  • Alcoholic fermentation at low temperature (18°C) in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing each grape variety and vintage to express itself to the full.
  • Systematic malolactic fermentation for increased roundness and complexity.
  • Blending, bottling, and secondary fermentation in Pol Roger's historic cellars, located 33 meters underground, where the constant cool temperature promotes optimal aging.
  • Traditional riddling by hand and a minimum rest period of three months after disgorging, guaranteeing impeccable quality before shipment.

Cuvée Rich is the result of a harmonious blend of the three Champagne grape varieties, sourced from 30 different crus, with 25% reserve wines to enrich its complexity. Each grape variety brings its own unique characteristics:

  • Pinot Noir: Structure, body, and power, mainly from the best crus of the Montagne de Reims.
  • Pinot Meunier: Freshness, roundness, and fruitiness, from the Marne Valley and the Épernay region.
  • Chardonnay: Aromatic complexity, finesse, and lightness, sourced from Épernay and the best vineyards of the Côte des Blancs.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep, dense, and brilliant yellow gold, accented with subtle coppery highlights. A creamy and regular effervescence enlivens the color.
  • Nose: Frank, elegant and open, the bouquet reveals generous notes of dried fruit, heady floral fragrances and subtle vegetal woody touches. A hint of spice and sweet scents complete this aromatic profile.
  • Palate: The attack is full-bodied, powerful, and complex. The wine surprises with its generosity and balance, where sweetness harmonizes perfectly with fruity and spicy flavors. The finish, marked by hints of blond caramel, offers remarkable length and persistent freshness.

Food and Champagne Pairings: Cuvée Rich is a versatile champagne, ideal for accompanying sweet and savory dishes or refined desserts. Its warm sweetness and aromatic nuances make it a perfect partner for:

  • Desserts: Fruit tarts, fine pastries, or white chocolate-based desserts.
  • Sweet and savory pairings: Pan-fried foie gras, blue cheeses, or slightly spicy exotic dishes.

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
