Vineyards have been growing around the Chateau de Camensac, a magnificent 18th century Chartreuse, for several centuries.
Previously called Château Camensac, this Château is a fifth Grand Cru Classé Pauillac of the prestigious 1855 list.
The vineyard covers 75 hectares of deeply drained gravelly slopes.
Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon: 60% and Merlot Noir: 40%
All the grapes are harvested by hand and the wine is aged in its entirety for 16 to 20 months in barrels, the proportion of new barrels of which varies between 35 and 80% depending on the vintage.
Blends and tasting notes
50% Cabernet Sauvignon
50% Merlot
La robe is garnet-red and luminous. The nose is clean and straightforward. Before swirling, notes of candied citrus, fine oak and vanilla.
After swirling, aromas of red fruit, gunflint and pepper-like spice. Straightforward attack. Beautiful balance. The palate is silky and tight, with ample, supple volume.
The finish is very long and very cherry-like.
Climate
From the end of the harvest, rain fell heavily. It eased off a little in December, but picked up again in January.
February increases the load with swell, wind, thunderstorms and hail. March remains gloomy. In May, fine weather arrives and it's warm in June, with some very hot days and nights. Flowering is normal.
July is cool and cloudy, and August downright wet. August 31 saw the start of the longest Indian summer of the decade, interrupted by a few hailstorms and waterspouts. The heat became abnormal (30°).
The Cabernet-Sauvignon matured and languished. The harvest was late but promising.
