Vineyards have been growing around the Chateau de Camensac, a magnificent 18th century Chartreuse, for several centuries.
Previously called Château Camensac, this Château is a fifth Grand Cru Classé Pauillac of the prestigious 1855 list.
The vineyard covers 75 hectares of deeply drained gravelly slopes.
Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon: 60% and Merlot Noir: 40%
All the grapes are harvested by hand and the wine is aged in its entirety for 16 to 20 months in barrels, the proportion of new barrels of which varies between 35 and 80% depending on the vintage.
Blends and tasting notes
60% Cabernet Sauvignon; 40% Merlot
La robe is a deep red. The nose is clean and straightforward. Before swirling, notes of cherries and flowers. After swirling, spicy aromas emerge, notably black pepper, a recurrent theme in Camensac wines. The attack is straightforward. The palate has body and structure.
Cabernet-Sauvignon adds volume. Harmony is assured. The finish is persistent and floral.
Climate
Right from the start of the 2012 harvest, rain was omnipresent until mid-February. Nearly 600 mm fell. And so much the better, as the three-year water diet had lasted far too long. Late winter and early spring will also be very wet, even snowy. The plant loves the unexpectedly hot weather in May (27.29°).
In June, cold and rain returned, alas for the flower. A phenological delay set in. July and August were sometimes scorching hot, but September was wet and the nights tepid. The harvest was brought forward because it was threatened. A succession of sunny days and cool nights calmed things down.
The Cabernet-Sauvignon was reassuring, but the Merlot remained under pressure. The harvest was a sporting affair. High-performance tools and cool-headedness are required. The harvest is halved, but if the grapes are healthy, the wine will be good.
