Vineyards have been growing around the Chateau de Camensac, a magnificent 18th century Chartreuse, for several centuries.
Previously called Château Camensac, this Château is a fifth Grand Cru Classé Pauillac of the prestigious 1855 list.
The vineyard covers 75 hectares of deeply drained gravelly slopes.
Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon: 60% and Merlot Noir: 40%
All the grapes are harvested by hand and the wine is aged in its entirety for 16 to 20 months in barrels, the proportion of new barrels of which varies between 35 and 80% depending on the vintage.
Luminous, almost violet garnet. Limpid and brilliant.
On the nose, aromas of red fruit, strawberry and cherry. After swirling, the wine opens with aromas of pink berries, black cherry and floral notes. On the palate, the attack is frank and lively. The tannins are enveloping and almost chalky. Cherry aromas are confirmed, encapsulated by minty notes. The finish is persistent and aromatic, with a red berry theme.
"Normally, autumn and winter are used to replenish the tablecloths. But this winter has had little humidity and is very mild - too mild. We even feared that the buds would come out too early and be mowed down by the first frosts.
A heavy rain finally arrived, but a little too late. In fact, vegetation had appeared, diverting rainfall from the water table.n Spring frosts, from early April to mid-May, made us fear the worst, which we reduced by notching very late. From May to June, rain and heat go hand in hand: a tropical atmosphere. Unfortunately, mildew was the main culprit. Closing of the bunches puts a stop to it. Temperatures are rather mild in July and August. Just before harvest, the Cabernet Sauvignon sweats and its berries shrink visibly. Once again, the vine surprises us with its resilience, producing a typically fruity Médoc.
Harvest dates: Merlot, September 14 to 26 and Cabernet Sauvignon, September 28 to October 5
