Château La Gaffelière

A very fine wine that reflects the very best produced on Rive droite de Bordeaux, here's Château La Gaffelière. Nestled between the Pavie and Ausone hills south of the village of Saint-Emilion, the first traces of this Domaine vineyard date back to Roman antiquity, as evidenced by remains discovered in 1969.

It takes its name from "Gaffets", a term used to describe lepers in the Middle Ages, when Saint-Emilion was home to a leper colony. At that time, most of them carried a stick, the "gaffe", which they used to beg and move around.

For over three centuries now, the estate has been governed by the de Malet-Roquefort family, who continue to develop the terroir with passion and energy, vintage after vintage.

The Château La Gaffelière was named Premier Grand Cru Classé as soon as the Saint-Emilion classification was created in 1955. Thanks to the high reputation of its wines, it will retain this distinction up to and including the 2021 vintage. At the beginning of 2022, Domaine will opt to withdraw from the classification, the next edition of which was due to be made official in September of the same year. Thus, from the 2022 vintage, the label of Château La Gaffelière will mention only the Saint-Emilion appellation Grand Cru.

Description Château La Gaffelière 2023.

"With its garnet-red color, La Gaffelière 2023 impresses with its charming nose of pronounced fruit expressions. Cherry, raspberry, blackberry and rose combine perfectly. When brought to the lips, it reveals itself to be elegant and well-balanced. Well-integrated tannins provide a supple texture. The fruit aromas are confirmed, bringing great freshness and are accompanied by spicy notes. A slight woodiness is felt on the relatively persistent finish." - Marie, Oenologist Premium Grands Crus - April 2024

Owned by the Malet Roquefort family since 1705, Château is nestled in St Emilion's golden triangle. A historic Grand Cru, La Gaffelière has distinguished itself for decades with its timeless, precise and always elegant style.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE VINTAGE

After an even flowering in spring and a summer marked by a few rainy spells, harvesting began at the beginning of September. The Merlots required a fairly long ripening period, while the Cabernet Francs, which usually ripen later, took advantage of the magnificent autumn to reach perfect ripeness.

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
