A Margaux of great class and infinite richness, welcome to Château Brane-Cantenac. In 1833, Baron Hector de Brane, then known as the "Napoléon of the vineyards", acquired a Domaine in the commune of Cantenac, where he sublimated the vineyard and gave it his name.
Thus was born Château Brane-Cantenac, which was promoted to Second Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification. It was during the 1920s that Domaine came under the Lurton family banner, and since 1992 it has been Henri Lurton, the fourth generation, who has been working to continue the journey begun by his predecessors.
The vineyard of Domaine rests on deep, mineral-rich gravel soils, conducive to producing great wines. It extends over 75 hectares of vines planted in red, 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4.5% Cabernet Franc and 0.5% Carménère.
The Domaine produces a Second wine, Baron de Brane, as well as a third wine, the Margaux de Brane.
Since 2019, a few parcels of Sémillon and Sauvignon blanc have made it possible to produce the white wine of Domaine, Brane-Cantenac blanc.
The Château Brane-Cantenac is renowned for its complex, elegant and racy wines, where the purity of fruit dominates.
2023 - Second hottest year on record
THE WEATHER
Following on from 2022, 2023 was the Secth hottest year since the beginning of the 20th century. Rainfall was very low during the vegetative cycle, and temperatures were high due to successive heatwaves.
IN THE VINEYARDS
The 2023 vintage demanded a great deal of responsiveness and required a great deal of work in the vineyard to combat the particularly virulent mildew. This incessant, precise work ensured good yields and perfect health.
THE HARVEST
Harvesting of the reds got off to an early start on September 4, in scorching heat. Beneficial rain, followed by a long-lasting return to fine weather during the harvest, enabled the pulp and skins to reach maturity. On the Brane plateau, young vines are harvested separately from older vines that are more than fifty years old. This strict selection allows us to exploit the incredible potential of these very old vines planted on the most beautiful plots of the estate.
AT THE CHAI
At Brane-Cantenac, winemaking is tailor-made, with each vat tasted daily to orchestrate Extraction operations and regulate fermentation temperature. In a vintage like 2023, this "à la carte" vinification revealed the best possible expression of each terroir and the three red wines produced from it.
A WORD FROM THE OWNER
If we reason objectively, analyzing the season's weather, everything came together to make 2023 a great vintage. I'll keep two significant elements from this year, which demanded a lot of hard work in the vineyard. The first was an exceptional emergence and flowering, unprecedented since 2004, forcing us to regulate production to ensure perfect ripeness in a context of severe drought. The second was strong mildew pressure, which is becoming less and less Rare. Our teams successfully met the challenge of combating it perfectly. The final yield is proof of our double success. The wines are very fruity, extremely colorful and, despite unprecedented tannin levels, extremely supple and silky. They combine maturity, freshness, power and balance. Henri LURTON
