Château Giscours

The Château Giscours combines all the titles of nobility proper to the greatest wines of Margaux. The first written mention of Giscours refers to a fortified keep around 1330, but its history did not really begin until 1552, when Pierre de Lhomme, a wealthy draper from Bordeaux, acquired Domaine and planted the first vines.

In 1847, Château was built in the Renaissance style as we know it today, then gradually its famous park was developed and production tools were modernized.

At the famous 1855 wine classification, Château Giscours was named Third Grand Cru Classé.

Taken over in 1995 by the Jelgersma family, meticulous work was carried out in the vineyard and winery to restore the property's reputation. Today, the vineyard comprises 100 hectares of vines: 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 15 to 17 months in 50% new French oak barrels.

The estate produces a Second wine, La Sirène de Giscours, as well as a third wine classified as Haut-Médoc, the Haut-Médoc de Giscours.

The wines of Château Giscours are synonymous with refinement and aromatic richness, carried on the fruit and apt to wait for long ageing.

Description Château Giscours 2018.

Among the great Bordeaux vintages of recent years, 2018 can be divided into two climatic phases: a mild and rainy spring, and a magnificent hot and dry summer which was very favorable to the good development of the vine cycle. At harvest time, the ripening of the different grape varieties at Château Giscours was perfectly completed thanks to a very nice late season in September and October.

Blend of the 2018 vintage: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot.

The color is a deep dark red with bright garnet highlights.

The nose offers a real range of freshness, with notes of red and black fruits, crème de cassis, cedar of Lebanon, Zan and violet.

Soft on the attack, it reveals a dense and fleshy body, sculpted by very elegant tannins. Evolving with charm and complexity, it offers a beautiful fruity burst in the middle of the mouth. It melts delicately on a fresh, long and particularly delicious finish.

Food and wine pairing:

Château Giscours 2018 in magnum could accompany an Angus beef tenderloin with a porcini mushroom and morel sauce, a truffled venison steak, a rack of lamb in a herb crust, veal medallion or steak with creamy mushrooms and a hazelnut crumble.

For a pairing with cheese, choose uncooked pressed cheeses: Edam, Gouda, Saint-nectaire, morbier, Tomme de Savoie or Salers.

For dessert, it will be exquisite with a black forest, Guillaume Mabilleau's extra hazelnut tart or a praline dessert.

Ageing potential and tasting:

Château Giscours 2018 in magnum has great aging potential, being able to wait between 2050 and 2055 to reach its peak. Indeed, the large capacity of the format gives the wine a greater ability to age.

However, it is perfectly suitable for drinking today if properly prepared. To do so, take care to place the bottle the night before in the serving room at room temperature and open it so that the wine can fully express itself. If not, open it and if possible decant it at least 6 to 7 hours before tasting.

The bottles should be kept in the cellar in a dark place, lying down, with an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
