"This Vintage 2016 is a vibrant tribute to the Pinot noir of the Montagne. Since the 2013 vintage, we've been looking for that singular expression of Verzy's Pinot Noirs, which are made from the first vines purchased by Louis Roederer in the mid-19th century." - Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, Cellar Manager

The House Louis Roederer is one of the names that comes up when we talk about the great houses of Champagne, being still one of the Rares to remain family owned for more than two centuries now.
Reigning over a vineyard of 240 hectares classified on sumptuous terroirs in Premiers Crus and Grands Crus, the House Louis Roederer has never ceased to offer generous Champagnes that embellish all occasions.
It was in 1833 that Louis Roederer inherited his uncle's house: the house of Champagne Dubois Père et Fils in Reims, which he had founded in 1776. From then on, he chose to take the habits and customs of the region in hand and showed great concern for controlling all the stages of production of his Champagne. At the time, marketing was the business of the wine merchants, while the vineyard belonged entirely to the winegrowers. Thus, in 1845, Louis Roederer bought about fifteen hectares of vineyards classified as Grand Cru and acquired the status of winemaker-negociant in order to reconcile the two trades.
In 1876, Louis Roederer II, who succeeded his father following his death in 1870, created at the request of Tsar Alexander II a special vintage for the exclusive consumption of the Tsars of... See more ...
The 2016 vintage was characterized by contrasting weather conditions: after a cool, wet spring, the summer was hot and Sec, culminating in a scorching episode at the end of August. Fortunately, the harvest period, from September 15 to October 1, was sunny and Sec, allowing the grapes to reach optimum ripeness.
These conditions particularly favored Pinot Noir, which revealed remarkable fruit intensity and a silky texture. The Chardonnay, meanwhile, displays a more classic elegance, with a chiselled, saline structure.
From the exceptional terroirs of Verzy and Chouilly, this vintage is composed of 68% Pinot Noir and 32% Chardonnay, with 33% vin sous bois and a subtle touch of malolactic fermentation (5%). Its 7 g/l dosage harmoniously balances freshness and gourmandise.
This Vintage 2016 shines with a luminous golden color, animated by a fine, dynamic effervescence. The nose opens with elegantly toasty, powdery aromas, blending ripe, juicy red fruit (burlat cherry, redcurrant), candied citrus and Secs fruit notes (hazelnut), all sublimated by a delicate roastiness. On aeration, mineral nuances of warm chalk and chalky millstone appear, adding further depth.
On the palate, the attack is generous, ample and creamy, offering a gourmet sensation of ripe nectarine. The silky-fine bubbles caress the palate, prolonging the substance in a rich, transparent impression. The long, saline finish stretches to woody, spicy and subtly camphorated notes, adding structure and complexity.
A vibrant tribute to the Pinots Noirs of Verzy, testifying to their singularity and richness, in line with the legacy initiated by Louis Roederer in the XIXᵉ century.
