We no longer present the splendid Château Carbonnieux, an emblematic property of the Bordeaux vineyard where the vine has been present since the 13th century. The first owners were the Benedictine monks of the Holy Cross Abbey of Bordeaux, and already at that time they contributed to making the white and red wines of Château known in foreign countries.
Classified as red and white in the Graves classification in 1953, it has belonged to the Perrin family since 1956, Eric and his brother Philibert Perrin being the fourth generation. With passion, they contribute to make Château Carbonnieux shine, whose great terroir is conducive to giving birth to great red and white wines.
The Château Carbonnieux reigns over a 92-hectare vineyard planted on gravel with clay and clay-limestone subsoils.
- The red grape varieties (50 ha) are 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The ageing of the great wine is 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels of which 30% is new wood. La Croix de Carbonnieux is the Second red wine.
- The white grape variety (42 ha) is 65% Sauvignon Blanc and 35% Semillon. The great white wine is aged for 10 to 12 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which are new wood. La Croix de Carbonnieux is the Second white wine.
The wines of Château Carbonnieux are renowned for their harmony, balance, and ageing potential. The reds offer silky tannins and allow the fruit to express itself, and what can be said of the whites, which are beautifully fresh and have an intense aromatic framework, ranking among the best in the appellation.
The 2019 vintage closes a first decade in a remarkable way. The vines were able to benefit from adequate climatic conditions, and in particular from a hot and dry summer until the beginning of August. At that time, some rains came at the right time to trigger the ripening of the berries under the best auspices. A beautiful sunshine lasted until the end of the harvest of the white grapes, offering them an excellent aromatic potential.
Blend of the 2019 vintage: 65% Sauvignon blanc, 35% Sémillon.
The robe is a brilliant pale yellow color, tinged with discrete green reflections.
The nose offers freshness and balance, with notes of citrus, acacia and white-fleshed fruits, followed by a hint of butter and orange zest.
The attack is frank, giving way to a very nice mid-palate supported by an acidic tension that gives it freshness and balance. Developing with a lot of roundness and fatness, it lasts a long time before blossoming on a mineral and salivating finish.
Food and wine pairing:
Château Carbonnieux white 2019 will wonderfully accompany many fish dishes: tuna or salmon tartar, Poisson blanc au beurre blanc, grilled lobster, turbot with hollandaise sauce or a seafood pasta dish.
It can also be served with white meat dishes such as veal chop à la Normande, sweetbreads with porcini mushrooms or a chicken "à l'ancienne".
For an agreement with cheeses, privilege those of goat and ewe: Selles-sur-cher, Pouligny-Saint-Pierre, Ossau-Iraty.
For dessert, it will be very appreciated with a fresh fruit salad, pineapple with basil or citrus sorbet.
Cellaring potential and tasting:
Château Carbonnieux blanc 2019 is a great white wine for aging, and is ideal to enjoy between 8 and 10 years of evolution. Its peak will be between 2027 and 2029.
However, it lends itself wonderfully to tasting today. To do so, take care to open and serve the wine when it is at a temperature of about 10°c.
The bottles will be kept in the cellar protected from the light, lying down, at an optimal hygrometric degree of 70%.
