The village of Mailly was classified Grand Cru in the early 20th century. This is where Champagne Mailly is located, in the heart of Montagne de Reims and precisely 14km from the eponymous town. Founded in 1929 by several winegrowing families, its history is resolutely different and illustrates the ambition and dynamism that has always reigned in the Champagne region. Even today, the House Mailly continues to shine thanks to its splendid vintages that combine finesse and elegance.
When the 1929 crisis arrives in France, a total of 25 winegrowing families will decide to face it by joining forces. They then founded the Society of Producers of Mailly Champagne and made the choice to make Champagne wines from only the grapes of their village classified as Grand Cru, with the aim of glorifying this terroir already considered at the time as exceptional. Welded by these difficult beginnings, the winemakers will manage to make their Champagne known throughout France and from the 1960s, the commercial development of the House Mailly will become a great success.
The village of Mailly is surrounded by the famous Grands Crus de Ludes, Verzenay and Verzy. The House Mailly has to date 70 hectares of vines on this village alone. The vines are 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, planted on chalky soils on hillsides that benefit from adequate sunshine and allow the grapes to reach full maturity. Today, there are no less than 80 winemakers who maintain the vineyards of this illustrious house of Champagne.
In addition, in the basement, the House Mailly has 7 floors of cellars and 1 kilometer of chalk. These cellars were dug into the chalk and by hand from 1929 to 1965 by the founding winemakers, who at the same time built vaulted cellars ideal for aging bottles.
Each cuvée of Maison Mailly illustrates in its own way the greatness of this chalky terroir, and they all share that characteristic freshness.
The Blanc de Pinot Noir Grand Cru cuvée is lively, gourmand and expressive, perfect for whetting your appetite with an aperitif but also with a gourmet meal.
L'exception Blanche is a Champagne Blanc de Blancs born to shine. Composed of 50% Chardonnay from Domaine to 50% Chardonnay from Côte des blancs in Grand Cru, it is round, mineral and on the fruit, and will exalt any connoisseur.
How can we not mention the cuvée Les Echansons 2012, a reflection of the best that the Mailly terroir has to offer in the best years. With great aromatic richness, smooth and generous, it is a great Champagne that does not leave one indifferent and will accompany refined dishes.
If we had to sum up the 2016 vintage it would be: frost, hail, rain and disease. Without a very fine September, the harvest would have been catastrophic. It remains a year with very heterogeneous quality; schematically we can say that the Pinot Meunier of Vallée de la Marne and the Pinot Noir of Montagne de Reims fared rather well, wines more on power than finesse. As for the Chardonnay, it was harvested late, after the reds (an exceptional event). Only grapes harvested on terroirs classified as Grand Cru can lay claim to a great vintage, and even more so in Côte des blancs, where the strong minerality produced a harvest of very high quality.
The Exception Blanche cuvée from Maison Mailly is an unprecedented cuvée. Exceptional in 2 ways: this is a Blanc de blancs, whereas the cuvées of Mailly are built on Pinot Noir on the one hand, and on the other, the cooperative has exceptionally "imported" Chardonnay Grand Cru from Côte des blancs, which is blended in equal parts (50/50) with Chardonnay from the finest parcels of Mailly.
La robe reveals a straw yellow color with sparkling golden highlights, enlivened by a string of fine, abundant bubbles. The nose opens with soft notes of lime blossom, white peach and melon, followed by richer aromas of nectarine, candied citrus, brioche and hazelnut, as well as more dynamic notes of bergamot and ginger. The finish is underscored by chalky, saline and lemony notes, making it long and intense.
This Exception Blanche 2016 cuvée from Mailly, a subtle harmony between minerality and roundness, will pair perfectly with Marennes Oléron oysters for that "little side" of hazelnut, or at the opposite end of the spectrum with a simple apricot tart.
