Treat yourself to the exceptional, choose large formats

Large formats offer a number of advantages that go beyond the simple difference in volume. The large format option offers significant advantages in terms of aging, preservation, presentation and practicality. Whether for a special event or to enhance your collection, large formats bring a touch of elegance and quality to every occasion.

Optimized aging for exceptional quality

First of all, let's talk a little about bottle aging. During this process, very small quantities of oxygen can enter the bottle via the cork. When this oxygen comes into contact with the wine, it modifies its components. Over time, this can lead to changes in color, aroma and structure. The slower the oxygen intake, the slower the aging process and, consequently, the higher the quality of the wine. To control the quantity of oxygen that comes into contact with the wine, several parameters come into play, including bottle size.

Our first advantage is slower, more harmonious evolution. In fact, whatever the size of the bottle, the quantity of oxygen entering through the cork will always be the same. However, depending on bottle size, the surface/volume ratio will change. The larger the bottle and the smaller the ratio, the slower the oxygen uptake and the slower the aging process.

Slower aging also means longer shelf-life. If aromas are less in contact with oxygen, they will evolve much more slowly. The same applies to wine structure. As a result, the wine's peak will be delayed compared to a 75 cL bottle, postponing the date of decline.

More generous and refined tasting

Large formats are often reserved for exceptional vintages. By choosing a magnum, a jeroboam... you ensure your guests a fuller tasting experience, with more persistent bubbles and perfectly balanced flavors, for prolonged pleasure on the palate.

Guaranteed "wow" effect for your events

Large formats also have an impressive visual impact. Their more or less imposing size attracts the eye more easily and adds a spectacular dimension to parties or special events. Serving wine in large format is a way of marking important occasions and creating an atmosphere of sharing and conviviality.

A smart long-term investment

While the price may seem higher, the quality/price ratio of large formats is actually very advantageous. In addition to better preservation, they enable you to enjoy exceptional vintages over many years. A perfect choice for collectors and connoisseurs.

Large format guide

To start with, we're all used to buying wine in a 75cl bottle. But why 75cl and not 1 liter? The reason dates back to the 19th century, when the standard size was officially established in 1866 to facilitate trade between the French and the English. In fact, the systems of measurement in liters for the French and gallons for the English were a real source of problems. English merchants therefore devised a container that would provide a round count for both the English and the French. Thus, with the 75 cl format, one gallon would correspond to 6 bottles of wine. This capacity quickly became a European standard, and it's also why cases of wine bottles are generally sold in 6 or 12-bottle packs.

The origin of Grands Formats names

Magnum and Jeroboam are the best known, but have you ever heard of Methuselah, Salmanazar or Nebuchadnezzar? Discover the history of these names, most of them of biblical origin, and the interest of these exceptional formats.

► The Magnum - 1.5 liters (2 bottles)

Let's start with the best-known, which isn't named after a king or emperor. First in logical order of capacity, the Magnum derives its origin from the Latin adjective magnus, meaning "great".

► Jeroboam in Champagne or Double-Magnum in Bordeaux - 3 liters (i.e. 4 bottles)

Jeroboam takes its name from two kings of Israel who reigned around 1000 BC. Jeroboam I is featured in the Bible as the founder of the Kingdom of Israel, of which he was the first ruler.

► Rehoboam en Champagne - 4.5 liters (6 bottles)

This name is linked to that of Rehoboam, the son of King Solomon whose reign brought about the schism of the northern tribes and then the creation of the Kingdom of Israel.

► Jeroboam in Bordeaux - 5 liters (7 bottles)

► Mathusalem in Champagne or Impériale in Bordeaux - 6 liters (i.e. 8 bottles)

This patriarch was famous for his longevity. As such, he is the oldest character mentioned in the Old Testament, said to have lived 969 years. To respect the general shape of their bottle, Les Bordelais created a bottle with square shoulders, named Impériale, no doubt in homage to the Napoléonian armies, thus contrasting Empire with the Royalty of the other bottles.

► Salmanazar - 9 liters (12 bottles)

Salmanazar V gave his name to this bottle size. King of Assyria as well as Babylon, he lived several centuries BC. His reign was relatively short, 5 years, and unfortunately little known.

► Balthazar - 12 liters (16 bottles)

One of the most famous names given to a bottle. For some, Balthazar is none other than one of the three wise men who came to Bethlehem for the birth of Christ. For others, the Balthazar who gave his name to this format is rather the last king of Babylon, famous for his propensity to enjoy grand banquets and therefore good wine.

► Nebuchadnezzar - 15 liters (20 bottles)

Babylon's greatest king, Nebuchadnezzar is known for many exploits, including his victory over the Egyptians and his part in creating the gardens of Babylon.

► Salomon or Melchior - 18 liters (24 bottles)

Also called Melchior, another Magi king. Solomon was ruler of Israel. Son of King David, he is best known for having built the Temple in Jerusalem. He is considered one of the most brilliant minds of his time.

Wines, Champagnes and spirits in large formats to enhance life's most precious moments

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
