Climatology, harvest conditions
2012 was a particularly contrasted year. Winter proved cold and very Sec. In February in particular, the average temperature recorded was the lowest for fifty years.
April brought cool weather and abundant rainfall, then May and June were characterized by intermediate weather. Flowering and veraison of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes at Château Mouton Rothschild took place, to the day, on the average dates recorded for all other vintages since 1962.
From July 20 to September 20, exceptionally dry weather prevailed, concentrating sugar and tannin in the grapes. August was the 5th wettest month in the last fifty years. By the end of September, cumulative rainfall was 26% below the average since 1962 (435 mm VS 589 mm).
In Château, the harvest began on October 1 and ended on October 15. 2012 was a historic year, as the new vat room, after almost three years of construction, welcomed its first harvest. Rich, colorful, structured and very fleshy, the 2012 vintage promises to be a great success.
Tasting notes
Beautiful deep purple color with purplish highlights. Expressive, complex nose with ripe fruit aromas reminiscent of bigarreau cherry and blackberry.
After a remarkably smooth and delicate initial impression, the palate fills out with a full, fat body that combines spicy, vanilla and prune brandy notes, culminating in a long, mineral finish.
