Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion

With its 5-century-old vineyard, Château Carmes Haut Brion is a must in the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

It was in 1584 that the Catholic monks of the Grands Carmes order - who take their name from Mont Carmel, literally "God's Vineyard" - were offered land by the lord of the Haut Brion house, Jean de Potensac.

At that time, Domaine comprised only meadows, a few vines and a mill located on the Peugue river. It was only 50 years later that the monks decided to expand their vineyard by purchasing plots belonging to Haut Brion. For two centuries, they produced one of the region's most famous wines, while keeping the name Haut Brion, which became Carmes Haut Brion by custom.

Confiscated in 1791 during the French Revolution, it became Bien National and was only bought back a century later by wine merchant Léon Colin, illustrious ancestor of the Chantecaille family. The latter then had the Château we know today built and the park landscaped.

In 2010, Château was bought by Patrice Pichet, a big name in real estate and a long-time lover of the property. Anxious to do his utmost to bring Domaine to its apogee, he will have a new winery built and the vineyard redeveloped, putting oenologists Guillaume Pouthier and Stéphane Derenoncourt in charge.

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2019, a Pessac-Léognan dominated by Cabernet Franc

The 2019 vintage in Pessac-Léognan was shaped by a hot, dry summer, tempered by cool nights that preserved the grapes’ aromatic vibrancy. Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion offers a unique interpretation of this vintage, driven by a dominant 42% Cabernet Franc—a grape variety that gives the wine its distinctive character and its floral, vivid signature, which is uncommon on Bordeaux’s Left Bank.

Tasting Notes for Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2019

The color is a deep, dense garnet with purple highlights characteristic of a sun-drenched vintage. On the nose, the initial impressions evoke raspberry and red currant, with a hint of violet that immediately reveals the Cabernet Franc component in the blend. With aeration, the bouquet expands to reveal notes of graphite, pencil lead, and mellow oak, intertwined with hints of pine and resinous wood. The attack on the palate is full-bodied, carried by a juicy and generous texture. The mid-palate reveals aromas of crisp red fruits, supported by a fine, chalky tannic structure—the hallmark of the wine estate’s great vintages. The long, lingering finish extends the notes of graphite and fresh fruit over a pleasingly long duration.

  • Blend: 42% Cabernet Franc, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot
  • Alcohol content: 13.5% vol.
  • Ageing: 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels (84% new), vats, and terracotta jars
  • Ageing potential: 2025 to 2045

Food and Wine Pairings

The refined tannic structure and fruity character of the 2019 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion naturally call for full-flavored red meats: a roast rack of lamb with herbs or a rib of beef in a herb crust will find an excellent pairing in this wine. Game birds, such as pigeon with porcini mushrooms, will also complement the graphite-like notes and velvety tannins of this Pessac-Léognan. To finish the meal, a matured, pressed-curd cheese will harmoniously round out the pairing.

When to Open This Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion

Its ageing potential, projected through 2045, is based on the solid structure of its tannins, the aromatic freshness preserved by the cool nights of the vintage, and the richness of the ageing in new oak barrels, which will gradually integrate to make more room for fruit and graphite notes. The wine can be enjoyed now, provided it is decanted at least two hours before serving to loosen up a structure that is still young and slightly tight. It will likely reach its peak drinking period between 2027 and 2038, when the chalky tannins will fully meld with the fruit.

The 2019 Vintage in the Vineyards of Pessac-Léognan

The winter of 2019 was mild and wet, ensuring good water reserves in the soil ahead of an early spring that significantly advanced the growing season. The hot, dry summer caused moderate water stress, which helped concentrate the berries without compromising their freshness. The cooler nights in late August and September played a decisive regulatory role, slowing ripening and preserving natural acidity. The harvest took place under excellent sanitary conditions, allowing Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion to select grapes at full phenolic ripeness.
