Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion

With its 5-century-old vineyard, Château Carmes Haut Brion is a must in the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

It was in 1584 that the Catholic monks of the Grands Carmes order - who take their name from Mont Carmel, literally "God's Vineyard" - were offered land by the lord of the Haut Brion house, Jean de Potensac.

At that time, Domaine comprised only meadows, a few vines and a mill located on the Peugue river. It was only 50 years later that the monks decided to expand their vineyard by purchasing plots belonging to Haut Brion. For two centuries, they produced one of the region's most famous wines, while keeping the name Haut Brion, which became Carmes Haut Brion by custom.

Confiscated in 1791 during the French Revolution, it became Bien National and was only bought back a century later by wine merchant Léon Colin, illustrious ancestor of the Chantecaille family. The latter then had the Château we know today built and the park landscaped.

In 2010, Château was bought by Patrice Pichet, a big name in real estate and a long-time lover of the property. Anxious to do his utmost to bring Domaine to its apogee, he will have a new winery built and the vineyard redeveloped, putting oenologists Guillaume Pouthier and Stéphane Derenoncourt in charge.

Description Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2016.

The Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2016 red wine appellation Pessac-Léognan offers a harmonious blend of 41% Cabernet Franc, 39% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Produced from vines with an average age of 41 years, planted on Mindel gravel on a clay-limestone base, this vintage was harvested by hand between September 21 and October 8, 2016, with a yield of 42 hl/ha.

Vinification, carried out without crushing and with a partial whole harvest, takes place in stainless steel, concrete and wood vats, followed by 24 months' ageing divided between 65% new barrels, foudres, cement vats and terracotta jars. The wine is naturally balanced (13.5% vol., pH 3.58).

On the palate, this vintage seduces with its elegant structure and aromatic intensity, with notes of black fruits, spices and a floral touch. Best served at 16-18°C, it's the ideal accompaniment to roast rack of lamb with thyme or venison with cranberries.

The care we take when receiving wines in our cellars enables us to detect bottles with imperfections (dirty or faded labels, damaged capsules, etc.). In such cases, they are systematically set aside and never put online! Our preparation team selects only bottles with perfect presentation for your orders!

It is these bottles with slight external defects that we present to you in the "Existe en imparfaite" selection. These bottles are, of course, of "irreproachable" gustatory quality, but suffer from slight defects on the label or cap. We therefore offer them at a preferential price, making the pleasure of tasting them even more affordable.
