Nestled in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, on the outskirts of Bordeaux, Château Brown embodies a perfect alliance between winemaking tradition and environmental innovation. Founded in the 12th century, the wine estate owes its name to John Lewis Brown, a Scottish merchant who acquired it at the end of the 18th century. Since then, it has stood the test of time by perpetuating its expertise in excellence, while adapting to contemporary challenges.
Château Brown covers 60 hectares, only 31 of which are devoted to vineyards. The rest of the wine estate is dedicated to preserving biodiversity: forests, meadows, gardens, and wetlands coexist, providing a refuge for a variety of flora and fauna. More than 40% of the property is left uncultivated, a deliberate approach to maintain ecological balance and promote natural ecosystems. Initiatives such as the installation of beehives, the creation of ponds, and the planting of protective hedges illustrate this commitment to biodiversity, reinforced by the High Environmental Value (HVE) certification obtained in 2018.
Precision and respectful viticulture
The wine estate practices precision viticulture, combining integrated pest management, reduced inputs, and soil cultivation. Almost complete plowing of the vineyard, the absence of herbicides, and the use of cover crops (rye, clover) help preserve soil quality and limit the environmental footprint. These methods, combined with an environmental management system integrated since 2012, demonstrate a desire to produce exceptional wines while respecting the environment.

Château Brown Rouge 2014 embodies the culmination of meticulous and visionary work carried out in the vineyard. For several years now, an ambitious restructuring program has been underway: increasing planting densities for deeper wines, gradually reorienting the rows to a north-south exposure to ensure optimal sunshine, and giving greater prominence to Cabernet Sauvignon, the emblematic grape variety of the left bank, on the finest terroirs. These bold choices, combined with perseverance, are gradually shaping a more assertive, more complex style for the château's wines.
This 2014 vintage first reveals itself through a promisingly intense color, heralding its concentration. On the nose, it displays a generous palette of black fruits subtly enhanced with spices, before giving way to smoky notes characteristic of its barrel ageing. These aromas mingle with hints of roasted coffee and white wood, the hallmarks of a wine that has benefited from its first spring in the barrel. The attack on the palate is frank, carried by aromas of raspberry, typical of great Cabernet Sauvignons. The tannins, which are very present, prove to be very elegant, silky, and enveloping. At the heart of the tasting, the wine reveals a dense and slender structure, with complex notes of Burlat cherry, blueberry, and iris. This aromatic richness is evidence of the maturity achieved in the fall, a key period for the concentration of aromas. The finish, both tannic and refreshing, combines power and freshness, with a touch of sapidity that invites you to take another sip.
The year 2014 was fraught with difficulties. After a promising spring and generous flowering, the months of July and August, with their lack of sunshine, put the vines to the test. Veraison was difficult and fears began to arise that the vintage would be compromised, as it had been the previous year.
But the late season had a wonderful surprise in store: from August 20, the sun shone continuously over the Brown vineyards, giving the grapes a welcome chance to catch up. The figures speak for themselves: only 90 mm of rain in July, 60 mm in August, and a single storm in September. The white grape harvest, which began on September 5, revealed Sauvignons with lively, structuring acidity, while the rare pockets of rot on the Sémillons suggested complications for the reds... which never materialized.
From the beginning of October, the Merlots were harvested in bright sunshine, delivering fleshy, delicious fruit with remarkable expression. The old Merlots, harvested between October 6 and 13, confirmed this trend. Finally, on October 14, the Cabernet Sauvignons, in impeccable condition, were picked in turn, bringing 21 days of harvesting to a close – a record length for the wine estate.
The first juices tasted confirmed the hopes placed in this vintage: deep colors, full-bodied and fruity palates, and captivatingly smooth tannins. Despite a capricious summer, September delivered on its promise, transforming the harvest and giving this 2014 vintage a quality that exceeds expectations.
